Goes Black Before That wrote:
It goes even further back than that. Tolan, who won the 100 in 32, was black. Metcalf won silver in that race. In 28 John London of U.K. won silver, was black. Harry Edward won bronze for U.K. in 20 and was also black. This was when very few blacks even had access to athletic competition, not to mention being less than 5% of the U.K. population and less than 20% of the U.S. pop.
But that guy thinks black sprinters only came around in the 80s, LOL!
One has to keep in mind that pretty much every black athletes before the 1960s came from the Northern states, despite the fact the bulk of the black population lived (and still lives ) in the South (on the contrary, looking at the data from former olympic trials, white athletes had more diverse geographic origins).
In 1936, at US Olympic trials, every race from 100m to 800m was won by a "Northern" black. How many from the Bible belt ? Zero. They came from Oakland, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Cleveland.
Not a single southern black competed, which is weird because whith a larger population + decent climate year round, you should have been able to see quite a lot of them.
Participation was limited to Northern blacks mainly because restrictive access to college in the South.
In 1960s, southerners began to compete and basically took over, at such point that nowadays, you seldom see american black not coming from the SEC or any other southern conference.
You seldom see an American sprinter that ends up being clean too.
Just saying.
