I first ponder how appealing it would be for successful head coach, e.g. Mike Smith, to leave a current gig to be an assistant to someone else (Robert Johnson) even at a place like Oregon?

UCLA AD Guerrero should be taking notes on this.
If you want a good coach you hire them in June. The last two changes were made in September. Which means the only coaches left are either unemployed (for a reason) or coaches with poor ethics who are willing to leave their team a week before the year starts.
Isn’t UW becoming an adidas team in the near future?

Who’s Mike Smith? The retired Canadian decathlete, now a broadcast commentator?

Yes, in 12 months.

The Mike Smith in question is the current coach at Northern Arizona.
My point is expect ducks to fly north . Murphy is an early guess . And honestly. Pretty good guess at that.
Didn't see this coming, heard rumors but figured no way. Wrong, not only does Oregon lose a distance coach they lose TWO!
With the recruiting class coming in and athletes returning you have to ask why? Money? I doubt it ( we all know Phil has deep pockets ) Powell's are alums and loyal, this is a shock in Eugene.
How about Jon Marcus and Steve Magness the new coaches?

Powells made a combined $206,000 at UO (Andy $130k and Maurica $76).
Metcalf alone made $197,000 last year.
My guess is that they'll make plenty more at UW. And even if it was close, it's hard to turn down the opportunity to run a Pac-12 program, especially one that has a monopoly on an entire sport in a region (Indoor in the West).
Also, the Powells are not alums of Oregon. Both went to Stanford.

A lot more to coaching than just talking about it. You have to actually achieve things now and again. and be able to talk to real people.
Great career move for Andy and Maurica --running their own show now -- and two great hires for UW. Why is Oregon always ready to run when it counts? There's your answer.
What the hell was I thinking, my bad, of course the Powell's both went to Stanford, God I need another drink!
Plus Seattle is a better place to raise kids.
Agree...I didn’t see this coming but sure makes sense when you think about it..running the show now and I’m sure the $ is decent, timing is good to get outta dodge also with the Hayward renos...

Can't believe UO treated them poorly (in a financial way).

I don't understand why letsrun is celebrating this move. It's just another example of the liberal agenda infecting all aspects of modern life.
Let me explain.
In the 1950's (Golden Age of Unites States of America) people (conservative Christians) respected traditions and preserving the status quo (nuclear families, gay marriage, etc). These days, people have no regard for traditions or respecting their elders or their God-Given Genders (transgenderism).
Modern people are driven primarily by money (sex). I guarantee that they are removing their children from day care where they have built lasting friendships with the other toddlers for the sole purpose of getting a bigger $$$$$.
This move is decidedly anti-american and despicable. The men and women of Oregen (two genders) are undoubtedly extremely upset, and Washington will be worse off with coaches driven only by numbers.
I'm not particularly a fan of this hire as I'd like to see them move towards sprints and field events, but this is such an odd take someone who have been promoted to a head coaching position. Chill out man.
They prefer to train more intellectual runners.
"Had their moments"?!?! Two time NCAA 1500m champion is a heck of a thing. And he bombed as soon as he left Andy. More silly letsrun gibberish, I suppose...you also forgot to disparage Elijah Greer.
UO didn’t treat the Powell’s poorly in a financial way, they were doing ok for assistants. But Oregon wasn’t going to pay them HC money with Johnson in that role, so they had to leave to get promoted, and with it, nice pay bumps.
