From the mugshot, the guy looks like a real douche. Is there anyone on LR that would do the same thing he did?
Homeless , of course, is a big problem, but random cruelty is not acceptable.
Which one of you threw the homeless guy's stuff in the lake? Runner on video.

Is it not illegal to throw garbage in a lake?

The jogger is a jerk. I can almost see him thinking, "If no one else is going to put a stop to this, I will."
What if we all had that attitude? There would be total chaos and lawlessness. Personally, I can't stand the way most people drive (driving slow in the fast lane, not using turn signals etc.), people with kids that scream in restaurants, inconsiderate people drive me nuts. Does that mean I should confront everyone who irritates me?
The jogger was basically taking the law into his own hands and most of you are supporting him. This really has become Trump's America.
90% of crimes (all criminal complaints) are not acted upon (let alone solved) by the police.
If Joe had called in a littering complaint how would Oakland police have reacted? -
So it follows that it's acceptable to take the law into your own hands?

Its a FACT that 99.3% of all crimes could be prevented by a bystander if we didn't have such strict and abusing bystander intervention laws put in place by the Obama administration!
Most illegal immigration (like the homeless gentleman in this story) would be stopped if all citizens took the law into their own hands!

As my user name might suggest, I have familiarity with the situation under discussion.
First, the homeless person whose belongings were thrown into Lake Merritt did not commandeer a meaningful area of public property as some posters have suggested. As of last Sunday, when I ran by him while I was doing laps around the lake, he and his possessions were occupying an area maybe six feet by three feet, which area is in a corner and otherwise unusable.
Second, the "jogger" is not a jogger. The perpetrator has a lengthy criminal record and was not some Lets Run elitist hobbyjogger out doing laps who suddenly decided to clean up the neighborhood by throwing a homeless person's possessions in the lake.
Three, the jogger was arrested for attacking someone filming the scene, not for his actions involving the homeless person's possessions. This is probably due to the fact that tossing the possessions is a misdemeanor whereas attacking someone is a felony.
Whatever one may think about tackling the homeless problem, throwing someone's possessions into the water and then attacking someone filming the event is not appropriate. -

If you wanted a mugshot that represented the regular LetsRun World Famous Message Board contributor, that would be it, except for me of course.
Also, "random cruelty" is also acceptable to the regular LetsRun World Famous Message Board contributor, and they indulge in it at every opportunity, especially here on the LetsRun World Famous Message Board, except me of course. Mainly they do it because it's fully deserved as was the case with this so called "homeless guy". -

I thought in a modern economy, a fundamental principle is that, on average, a human is a useful resource (takes in fewer resources than produces). If this is not the case, we probably need to rethink, like, everything, especially capitalism.
Yes, "on average" a human is a useful resource. Unfortunately, there is a percentage of the population that is not.. For starters about 15% of the population has an IQ below 85 making them mostly unemployable.
Looks like your IQ may be one of those sub-85ers. Pointing out that some must be above average and some must be below average is really quite unnecessary -- even unproductive. Maybe you should just stop trying? -

Yeah, littering is illegal.
1. throws stuff in the lake, littering illegally. 2. goes home, realizes he was on film, worries a lot, and fears police. 3. returns the next day as the newly born "environmentally converted citizen" (who is scared of being arrested). 4. starts cleaning his hate mess successfully and he would have been good after this. no police problems.... but 5. while on the right path, doing great, and atoning for his mistake, he loses his shi-t and steals a cell phone.... This is a one stupid idio-t!!! -

Kind of makes one want to orchestrate something like this with the help of a friend to get sympathy and donations...
This Jogger Joe is representative of the worst of the arrogant garbage this board seems to populate itself with - from the comments here a lot of you are just like him, you should be proud of yourselves you God-awful excrement of humanity.
Difficult not to be sickened by the attitudes of some of the (white) posters here - and it is white people saying this, and worse - seemingly regardless of the topic you people (am I'm referring to people who post comments like this) the find a way to display your self-entitled condescension, just because you are white and you think you can.
Hopefully the vast majority on here are sickened by this action and the response on here too - every one of the friends I have here who happen to be white were shocked by this, and brought up the issue of race right away, but I really don't know what to think any more (even over here I encounter too many white people who are feeling freer to come out from under their slime-covered rocks to spew their garbage.) -

I live in Los Angeles, another area where the homeless population is getting out of control and there have been times running where literally the entire sidewalk is blocked with homeless encampments and trash, forcing me to run onto the busy street or through piles of trash and junk. Even one of the local parks I run it has homeless people making the park bathroom their home-clothes and trash spewed all over the bathroom floor. It starts to become a sanitary and safety issue and while they keep saying they are going to build or find more housing, it hasn't seemed to happen.
I especially love this post - glad you manage to get his frustration whilst enduring such an upsetting experience of having to run around these "vermin" not only on the sidewalks but in Your local park as well. The horror! And I'm sure they're just doing it to annoy you personally - who do they think they are getting in your way...
America. What a country. -
Sadly true.
The problem for that dude isn't the fact that there is an army of homeless people on the rise in his city, it's just that they're getting in the way of his run!
Is this the point we've got to as human beings? -

Man, so the guy was arrested and is being held on $100K bail? Our society is f'd up ... now ole jogger joe will lose his job and have to setup camp right next to the homeless bum. We shoulda been thanking jogger joe.
Joe the jogger is an idiot. If you're fed up with all the litter/belongings being in the way, why in the hell would you dump it in the lake!? That's much more unsanitary. He could 1) talk to the homeless guy and ask him to move his sh1t; 2) failing that, he could move it for him, either to a trash can or to a less disruptive space. Throwing it in the water only makes the environment worse. -
Well, from a running point of view it is important and this is a running site and the "problem for that dude" is "the fact that there is an army of homeless people on the rise in his city" because as you say "some of them are getting in the way of his run".

I love how everybody on these boards just assumes that the white guy in question is some upstanding citizen who is simply mad as hell and won't take the litter anymore when he's more likely a meth head with some personal beef against the black homeless guy. I see homeless people attack each other all the time. When it's white homeless people beating each other up, no one calls the cops, they usually tire quickly and trudge away from the scene of the crime. Black delinquents usually end up in cuffs.
Anyway, the meth head in this instance ended up attacking an upstanding Oakland resident, yet you water heads are supporting him. Good to know. -

If you are American you could make the country better by leaving. You can take a homeless guy with you as well. Thanks -
