Cherry picking three athletes who have much better PRs than 13:38/3:58 = sub 8:20 doesn't prove your point at all. I really don't think you are very familiar with physiology either.
Why the conspicuous omission of Lincoln, Marsh, Croghan, Diemer, Huling, Dobert, Slattery, Huff, Lopez, Nohilly, Nelson, Bruce, Leslie, Brown, Gary, Gerber, Olinger and Cooper?
I wrote in the explanation that I chose the first three steeplers that came to mind.
It does prove my point, because those are USA Olympic team steeplers who had better PRs than 13:38/3:58, but had not broken 8:20 by an incredible amount (or at all). Your response that a runner who has PRs of 13:38/3:58 should run faster than 8:20 implies that someone with better PRs should run much faster than 8:20 and those three athletes help to prove that that's not necessarily true.
It doesn't mean that you're incorrect all of the time, but you are incorrect in three random cases that I pulled off of the top of my head. Which means 13:38/3:58 = sub 8:20 cannot be taken as factual without further research.
My responses to you are amicable. It's simply discourse. There's no need to say "I really don't think you are very familiar with physiology either." I have a proficient understanding of physiology. I took exercise physiology in college and spent several hours in the lab. I've also coached talented athletes alongside some very talented coaches for several years now, providing me with sufficient empirical evidence to support my understanding.
I don't know that I know more than you do about training, in fact, I might know quite a bit less. I respect your opinion and your accomplishments, but I'm not a schlub. Just like you, I know what I'm talking about and sometimes I'm incorrect. In this case the jury is out, but there's no need for you to be condescending. I'm not like several people on this forum who act like they know everything. I know that I don't. When you responded to my post in disagreement I tried to provide some evidence to support my initial statement because I still believe that it is correct.
With that said, I would be stoked for you to share your knowledge of the steeplechase here so that I can glean information from your perspective/experiences.
