I usually avoid putting my 2 cents worth in when discussions take this turn, but I am going to make an exception. Statistics have borne out again and again that pedophilia is a problem that cuts across all social, ethnic, religious, racial, economic, and cultural boundaries. Some of you derive satisfaction from buying into and perpetuating the myth that pedophilia is primarily a Catholic problem, but it simply isn’t true. Atheists themselves are no more, but also no less, likely to commit these crimes, or have this issue, than any other demographic.
Also, with regard to suicide rates among Catholics, it is true that the general Catholic population commits suicide at close to the same rate as the general population of society at large. However, those who attend Mass weekly take their own lives at a much lower rate, and for those who attend Mass more than once a week, the rate goes down to practically zero. The reason for this seems to be that people of strong faith are able to find meaning in their suffering while those of no faith are not, generally speaking. I highly recommend the book “Man’s Search For Meaning “ by Victor Frankl, a Jewish holocaust survivor.
Finally, I am saddened by the tragic loss of Anthony Bourdain. He seemed like a genuinely good man in spite of all the rough edges. May his soul Rest In Peace.
