granted, other than sports i have barely turned the tv on in 10 years, but still...until today I never heard of this guy.
RIP whoever you are, dude,...but can someone explain what he did to become so beloved?

He wrote a truly great book about working as a line cook. He wrote a couple other food books after becoming a celeb chef that were pretty good, too. He also wrote at least one novel.
He hosted several highly popular food-travel TV shows into which he sprinkled liberals amounts of poetry and politics. If you didn't like the politics, you'd probably like the poetry (or the food and travel), and vice versa.
Despite upper-middle class origins, as a foul-mouthed, tatted-up, ex-heroin addict he had the bombed out 70s NYC Panic in Needle Park style about him. People liked the bluntness mixed with fine taste, kind of like Gordon Ramsey if Gordon Ramsey was actually an impressive artist.
He called vegans "waterheads", insisted his film crews show the animals that he ate being butchered, praised guns w/ Ted Nugent, said he would like to beat Kissinger to death with his bare hands for what he did in Cambodia, staunchly supported #metoo and said he would feed Trump hemlock for dinner, so his politics were sufficiently crude and all-over-the-place that he appealed to a wide range of people.

I was banned until today for a post I made after Kate Spade’s suicide.
Therefore, I will not be writing any comments here. Don’t want the mod’s panties all in a bundle again.
Internet and Social Media have isolated us.

You write that most of what we know about suicide is not true and then you claim that Kate Spade’s suicide likely pushed Bourdain over the edge. This is absurd because you have no clue. Bourdain killed himself but Kate Spade probably had nothing to do with it.

Maybe not, maybe so. I took the opportunity to bring attention to the chain suicide issue, which is a real thing and should be taken into account whenever a suicide happens for any reason. I thought that was pretty clear.

I don't see suicide as a bad thing and respect everyone's decision to do it even if it's not that best decision.
Better than a battle with cancer or a heart attack IMO. Or being miserable or having to take psychiatric medication.
I think any so-called "right-to-die" has a very high probability of becoming a "duty-to-die" with lots of people being dispatched against their will or without their consent. That's been occurring in enormous numbers at the start of life.
I'm offended by your inability to communicate in a thoughtful and nuanced manner.
I believe it is best not to glorify the act of suicide as it will often trigger others with mental issues to more readily act upon their worst impulses.
More Veterans will take their own lives than celebrities. They're the ones that need more mental health services.
With that being said, people seem to be more fragile mentally these days.
Could it be the High Fructose Corn Syrup, gluten, synthetic hemp, or possibly the lefty liberal commie pinko worldview propagated by schools and the media?

You don't deserve discourse with people who communicate in a thoughtful and nuanced manner.
It just occurred to me, one reason many lefty liberals hate President Trump is that they have no sense of humor.
I feel much more sympathy for the families that have to deal with the emotional burden of dealing with the loss caused by a suicide than a person who for whatever reason chooses to end their life.
In the New and Old Testament mental illness was often associated with evil and demonic spirits. The modern man will laugh at this, but there are still forces acting in this world to oppose God and his Goodness.
Pride and glorifying the self can often lead many to believe they can live life without God. This is what Satan wants the modern man to think. And this is where hopelessness grows and they ultimate lie is believing suicide is an option.

I don't think Chang can do it. He seems even more abrasive than Bourdain, but in a less likable way. Plus, his insistence on canonizing junk food just comes off as tired. No one wants to watch a show on how you think Dominoes Pizza is the best pizza because it reminds you of playing video games as a kid. I want to like Chang, and I watch his shows, but he always lets me down.
I could tell that Bourdain was extremely troubled; I think we all could.
But the bigger picture here is that we're making life miserable with the way that we live. Endless hours at work, constant derisiveness to those around us. Robespierre-like attitudes towards anyone with whom we disagree. Tall Poppie Syndrome. It has to stop. We need more love in this world. Love is the way.
Dominoes is rancid. I don't care how drunk or genre-bending your are.
The anecdote is beautiful. If you haven't backpacked, traveled on the cheap, or put out your thumb somewhere on a lonely highway in South America, these kinds of moments simply don't happen. Bourdain was an emissary to all of this.
This is rough to hear but a sign we need to end toxic masculinity in heterosexual males lives.

Chain suicides are real the same way that chain school shootings and other trends are real. When the information is out there at a vulnerable time, it can provide the nudge that pushes some over the edge. It can be as simple as adopting new garments or hairstyles and as extreme as adopting the mind of mindset that has one choose to end their life. Those who alluded to the situation being devoid of logic come the closest in my estimation. If it was a logical decision we could devise a system that would allow us to identify and intervene.
When there are warning signs, unfortunately, they tend to be for those who want to continue to live but are unable to verbalize their struggle and pain. Those that truly want to do it are able to because they don’t telegraph it.
Another consideration is that Bourdain, it seems, was self-meditating with drugs and alcohol from a young age. When those become the mechanisms of coping and then one attempts to clean themselves up (I believe he had been trying to be more healthy and sober), there is a void because they have not taught themselves the necessarily skills to deal with some of life’s struggles.
