Was true freshman Everett Smulders of Ole Miss really a 4:18 guy last year?
My God. If so Van Hoy is a GOD.
Set school records in 800m (1:53.47), 1600m (4:15.18), 1 Mile (4:18.57) and 3200m (9:27.01) … Won the 2016 and 2017 state championship in 800m and 1600m … Was the starting point guard of the varsity basketball team.

Why are the ESPN announcers always so obsessed with saying they are running more distance if they are on the outside lane? They say this in every single distance race. I would definitely rather run on the outside and more distance than be boxed in on the inside and never make a move.
-
It looked like Josh Kerr was boxed in for a while in heat 2 and it took him a while to get to the outside. It worked out for him in the long run, but he could've been in danger if he was stuck on the inside for much longer.
-
Wasn’t USC a choice in the 4x100 prediction contest? They weren’t in the event.
-
Oh good John Anderson's head, oh is that a bell? huh I wonder what's on the track

I talked to Everett Smulders. He told me the Ole Miss bio is incorrect. He ran 1:50 and 4:15 last year. But from 4:15 to NCAAs in one year is really good. He said coach Van Hoy told him at the beginning of the year if he didn't make NCAAs it wouldn't be a good year.
He was third indoors in the mile at SECs and 6th outdoors.

His teammate Robert Domanic isn't conceding the title to Josh Kerr. He says he takes confidence in knowing he's fitter than lat year when he ran 3:54.

Sam Prakel talks below. After day 1 indoors, the Ducks were told not to talk to the media but they are doing it here. I asked him about that.

Jonathan Gault will upload an interview with Josh Kerr soon. Josh Kerr just implied he wants to get the collegiate record in the 1500 final. He's already won 3 so if he blows up- no biggie.

Lots of stellar true freshman this year, headlined by Sam Worley and Noah Affolder who just made the final of the 1500 and Steeple.
Worley (texas) - 3'40 1500 / NCAA finalist
Affolder (syracuse) - 8'40 Steeple / NCAA finalist
Marco Arop (Miss St) - 1'46.7 / NCAA prelims
Luis Grijalva (NAU) - 3'41/13'49 / NCAA prelims
Everett Smulders (Ole Miss) - 3'44 / NCAA prelims
Cooper Teare (Oregon) - 3'43/13'46
Reed Brown (Oregon) - 3'39
Waleed Suliman (Ole Miss) - 1'47/3'39
Side note: unreal that with Smulders, Suliman, and Cade Bethmann Ole Miss has THREE true freshman at 3'44 or faster for 1500. -
Brian Barraza let up early and it cost him an auto spot but he'd get in on time.
He was amazingly calm about the gaffe.

Dan O'Brien is doing a pretty good job here. Definitely an upgrade from Larry Rawson

OK. Here is the biggie from Josh Kerr.

Georgia's Kendal Williams is out of the men's 100. He ran 10.16 into a -.9 wind and the next head had a +1.2 wind and a bunch of 10.10s.
-
Bacon misses the final. Wow. Something needs to be done about the wind aided stuff.

They should do multiple wind readings and adjust.
The wind changed by3.2 m/s in teh span of about 10 seconds. That's like worth .16 according to some in the mized zone.
They first round was LOADED and they were running into aw wind. The next to heats had tail winds.

Which Michael Saruni will show: the collegiate record holder, or the guy who tripped last year, which of course makes him a different person than the Saruni who did not trip during his collegiate record??

A bit late but 44.98 to make 400 final is sick.
-
I didn't record the interview but USC's Robert Ford is into his first NCAA final and he gave all the credit to new USC distance coach Pat Henner - formerly of Georgetown.
