I'm already feeling down in the dumps, but reading about what happened to Cheruiyot made me realize that I should be grateful that I never encountered a position like that.
Did he commit suicide? Makes me think.
rest his soul.
yeah whos the guy who ran as him in the steeple at music?
I dont know the full details of what happened but basing off what the article says its somewhat nice to see that he ran a bit before he was killed. May be comforting to hear he got to do what he presumably loved best before he died. Ive always thought that if I were to die young it would to be while in the middle of an awesome run so my freinds would at least know I died doing what I love to do. RIP GEOF
This is sad news, especially since I’m also a recent college grad. RIP.

I don't think it appears to be suicide. I think belief it might have been suicide, as others have said, stems heavily from use of the phrase "laid down" in the article. We're attributing intention on part of GC in laying down, but how it looks on a dash cam or words author uses might be misleading.
The article says car flipped near where it struck median a mile from where CG was struck in road.
If you're going to kill yourself there are much easier ways than rolling your vehicle, running a mile, and then lying down. Vehicle striking a median near a construction zone obvious accident to me. Late hour suggests likely lack of people on road to me. Going a mile suggests going for help to me.
And if you take a minute, Google Street View around I-40 westbound lane from around Mile 434 to around Mile 433.: It's about a mile or so before any houses visible, until you can see a KOA east of westbound lane (actually heading north on this section of I-40 westbound).
Knowing what we know now: I think GC probably saw closest lights at campground, was going for help, collapsed while crossing road and got hit.
Whatever the case is: My heart goes out to this kid and his loved ones. Horrible situation and insane waste for some who had come so far in life at such a young age.
I'll pray
Early reports from news sources are not necessarily wrong; early news reports are always incomplete. Those involved in serious auto accidents usually suffer at least a mild concussion to fatal brain trauma. Brain trauma would explain all of G Cheruiyot's actions. We may or may not get all of the answers.
I'm the meet director for the Music City Distance Carnival. That was an unfortunate error by our timing crew with a misidentified hip #. Geoffrey was obviously a scratch.
However, Geoffrey did get to run a lap. Darren Rovell of ESPN explains in this tweet:
