The reason they scare me so bad is how a Park Ranger once put it when I asked about cougars: If you see one, it has probably been following you for a while and decided you aren't dangerous enough to hide from.
OP's assumption is that because an animal attacked solo humans on a trail, when there are very many humans on the trail, there is a greater probability of an attack. Which, is false.
A vaguely healthy wild animal wants nothing to do with noisy, smelly humans. Put a bunch of the noisy, smelly humans together and they are even more discouraged.
Do not feed the bears.
