Fortunately, the event of his dismissal was caught on film:
There are no men in this article. The sad thing is that these are the modern American men - soft and pathetic. They want to be cared for - sensitive little guys.
Metcalf sounds like a total aZZhole. I can't believe the athletes tolerated his bullshit for so long

Can you please re-post Prouse's words?
I will fucking comment. Bullshit. These are “athletes” over age of 18. Not children. 60–80 mpw? No wonder he thinks they are fat pussies. Garbage upon steaming poop on fire. Greg showed me the coolest place I’ve ever run, Discovery Park in Seattle, I was a walk on frosh he was a 5th year senior All American. Looked up to him. Had great Tecmo Super Bowl League with him in apt building...4233 7th Ave NE if I recall. I gained a lot from running 6 miles to and back from there to Discovery Park. 3 loops there. Transferred from UW as walk on in fall 93. Last time UW beat Portland at NCAA. Wound up graduating from Portland. Proud Pilot, but still have large bit of regret for how and why I left U Dub. Proud to have been a Husky. Hope I can consider myself always a Husky. Huge part of that is having been around Greg Metcalf. Unreal to me to think of how great it would be to run for him at UW. Hope others who experienced success and growth from knowing him speak up and put a name to it.
Jason Drake (J.D.) should absolutely get this job. He's the interim head coach right now and all the athletes love him. He's also a great coach, motivator, organizer and all around good guy. From what I know from current and former athletes who are friends of mine, he was the glue that held this program together over the past few years. I was coached by him back in the W.S.U. days and have nothing but good things to say about him. I'm actually surprised another school hasn't stole him from U.W. yet. If you want to see U.W. thrive, hire J.D.
^if all this was going on it seems like JD would have known about it. If so, they’re better off cleaning house and starting over. The culture seems broken. Plenty of great young coaches getting it done without making athletes miserable. Go after someone like Siemers at Co State.
I know you enjoyed it when Greg caressed your belly, but you have to admit to yourself that it was wrong.
Not a follower of his. Does he actually get results? I know that he had a couple of championship runners when I was at uni. A women's 1500m and men's 800m. Anything significant since then? Is coaching in minor sports not like how it is in football or basketball? You can stay on for years even if your athletes aren't winning anything?
Drake might be the best for the job, but given everything that has come to light on mecalf, the administration may prefer to bring in someone from outside and start with a clean slate and thus, purge anyone associated with the old coach. It might not be fair to the current coaches and their families and I would not be surprised if the admin goes in that direction.
He was fortunate to have had a powerful program with a steady stream of solid recruits, otherwise he may have been gone years ago. Others have been canned for much less
This is the tip of the iceberg. The real problems are why he left.
Grote, would you say Wetmore and Powell/Johnson are p&ssies? Because their retention rate is double that of Metcalf.
JD let all this slide and turned the other cheek. That is not a leader.
I won't defend the guy as I didn't particularly care for him as a person or a coach. Not to say he was bad at either, just not my style, though I and nearly everyone else ran well under him during my time. I think he could have been a better coach, but he was still young and learning at the time. And yes, he's a sleezy car salesman but that hardly makes him evil. Pretty much from what I can tell in the article, it sounds about right I guess is what I'm saying. That said, I hope there's more to the story than what's in the article. 'Cause if that's it then the people who blackmailed him into quitting or getting him fired should literally be ashamed of themselves. I give girls a bit of a pass, but for a guy (group of) to potentially ruin a man's career and family because they got their effing feelings hurt? They really need to take a step back, take a good long look in the mirror, and remove their testicles from their bodies. They are not allowed to be associated with the male gender anymore (though I suspect the type of raging p*ssy that would do this would call gender a 'social construct' and be okay with not being associated with 'male' but I digress). Was Greg a d*ck to me? You bet. Did he do inappropriate crap around the team? You bet. Did any of this warrant a group of social justice ninjas operating from their base at the top of Mount Douche secretly planning and executing the end of his coaching and throwing his family life into chaos? No. To put this into perspective, you've got me - a guy who DOESN'T EVEN LIKE METCALF - taking his side. I hope the little sh*ts that pulled this read this board and genuinely hope that one day they grow up, become men, and realize what snivelling little twats they were when they were 20 and try to make some sort of amends. Or at least stop being twats. The real world isn't going to be all that kind to you, Sumner Goodwin, Jamie Coughlin, Aaron Schlossman. I hope torpedoing careers isn't the only defense you have against huwt feewings.
Not sure if this is in the thread already.... Seattle Times tonight
Metcalf’s departure is definitely the tip of the iceberg—the article today outlines some horrific behavior. It doesn’t mention a lot of other misconduct that many people in the industry know to be true, not just about Metcalf but of the male-dominated nature of the coaching profession. Gymnastics is having its reckoning. Swimming is having its reckoning. Track and field is totally overdue. It’s starting as athletes feel more empowered to report abuse and sexual misconduct that they experience or know about. Coaches right now should be scared to death for any indiscretions or even appearances of indiscretions, past or present. Inappropriate relationships/abuses of power/obliterating professional boundaries with assistants, athletes, etc. —all stuff we know is rampant in this sport.
UW's Women's crew program went through a similar process just a few years ago as well.
I see your point but when a coach's personality/demeaner/actions affect the culture of the team and turn an environment toxic he/she needs to go. The percentage of athletes that didn't use their complete eligibility in comparison to other good programs is abysmal, the amount of transfers and the fact that there were so many athletes constantly injured isn't the sign of a good coach or leadership. Say what you will about the athletes that stepped up to complain, the athletes deserve better. UW deserves better. All over this board UW is referred to as "the place good runners go to die"....this was Metcalf's doing. I am glad a change is being made. It is not a matter of him just being a d*ck, it is a matter of doing what is best for the team. Their recruiting this year was crap and it isn't a coincidence. Everyone knew to avoid UW...the running community is a small one.
You say 'toxic environment' which almost makes me discount you out of the gate. But, Tell me, it it a 'toxic environment' when only a portion of the team feels that way? Or is it the victims and victim culture coming to roost?
% of athletes not competing eligibility: tell me how hard or easy it is to walk on to these programs before you state it as a viable metric. There were TONS of kids who came on the program that had no business being there while I was around. Greg let them try. Most of the time it didn't work out because he was letting sub-par athletes with some heart give it a shot before pulling the plug.
Injuries: give me some metric that this % is more than a standard deviation from other top programs.
Athletes deserve better? By that you mean perfection, obviously. Plenty thrived, plenty didn't give a sh*t about him being a general turd. You're asking NCAA coaches to cater to the lowest common emotional denominator. I say weed the p*ssies out.
As much as I don't like him, he got results from quite a few individuals and teams. To argue that and say UW is where good runners go to die is disingenuous at best.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?

Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
