In fact, he never won a single major international race until 2017.
Now, he has won two:
- Chicago Marathon 2017
- Prague Marathon 2018 (if you want to call that major
Here is another short list: the number of accomplished world class runners that Rupp had to beat to win those two soft races.

Oh, and at Chicago I forgot 2:03 guy Stanley Biwott, world half marathon record holder and 2:06 guy Tadese, multi-time Majors podium finisher (no easy feat) Bernard Kipyego.
In fact, it seems like the only top level marathoners that Rupp has not vanquished after the Olympic Trials are Kipchoge, Kipsang, Bekele, G. Kirui, and the host of upstart Ethiopians that have emerged in the past couple seasons (Adola, Kitata, the Dubai crew). So that's like 10 guys or so.
Rupp is a top 10 marathoner in the world right now. Period.

That an almost unbelievable resume for an American runner. Hell, that's a pretty good resume for ANY runner.
I'm sure even if he had run London this year and won, the Rupp haters would have dismissed it with something like "Oh well Kipchoge, Bekele, and Farah are old and past their primes. When's he going to race some REAL competition?"

I asked who was behind Rupp in the two major races that races he WON. "Won" as in first place. Get it?
Did Rupp win the Olympics? No. Did Rupp win Boston? No.
As for "2:04 guy Feyisa Lelisa," you are just embarrassing yourself: Lelisa ran 2:04:52 SIX YEARS AGO. He has not gone under 2:06:30 since then, and his 2017 best was 2:14! "2:04 guy" lolololol!
Kimetto?? He has been washed up for years. His 2016 best was 2:11 and he didn't even finish a marathon in 2017!
Your post has only proven my point. The races Rupp has won (using your Chicago examples) came over washed-up runners with no current ability to run a fast time. (By definition, in fact: they couldn't keep up with a 2:09!)

OK, I will give you this. He is in the top two non-African born marathon runners active so far in 2018. (Sondre Moen (winning Fukuoka in 2:05) is quite obviously his superior.)
In the world, top 20 or maybe top 15 is fair.
Top 10? Laughable. Cherry-picking a couple of slow/B-list races is not impressive. Not relative to over a dozen guys running faster to win/place in much better races.
