Yeah NOP has Centro (3:50), Jenkins (3:53), and Engels (3:53), and (maybe) Murphy (3:51).
But the working class heroes in the Bronx are the deepest mile club in America.
Check out the depth...
Kyle Merber 3:52.22 (3:34.54)
Johnny Gregorek 3:53.15 (3:35.00)
Ford Palmer 3:54.92, (3:36.98)
Colby Alexander 3:54.94, (3:34.88)
Graham Crawford 3:56.05, (3:37.08)
Donn Cabral 3:56.41
Jesse Garn 3:57.23
Sam McEntee 3:57.86, (3:36.81)
Travis Mahoney 3:58.61,
Rob Napolitano 3:58.90, (3:39.70)
Reed Buchanan 3:59.24
If the afore-mentioned NOP foursome raced the top 4 NJNY guys in a 4 X mile, it would be interesting.
Lead off Alexander (3:34.88) vs Engels (3:35.95) . Every time they've raced it's been close. As far as I can tell they've raced 7 times and Colby has a 4-3 edge. . Alexander won at 2017 Tracktown #1... at 2017 Westchester,... at 2017 NYRRC 5th Ave and at 2018 Payton Jordan. Engels won at 2016 Olympic Trials... at 2017 Falmouth, and 2017 Tracktown #2. They'll hand off tenths apart.
Second leg Palmer (3:54) vs Murphy (3:51). It's Murphy every time up until the recent Murphy. The present-time Murphy is pretty unpredictable. But still, Murphy sits and hangs and outkicks Palmer anyway, handing off with a 2 sec lead.
Third leg Johnny Gregorek (3:35.00) vs Eric Jenkins (3:35.94) ...Johnny was ranked US #1 last year by T&F News. He was the only American in the World Chmps Outdoor 1500 final. Can he make up 2 seconds on Jenkins? With Jenkins doing all the work in the lead, and Johnny stalking....maybe. Johnny's more of a pure miler than Jenkins.
Anchor...Merber vs Centro. It's close at the hand-off. But Centro does his thing and brings it home. Not to take anything away from Merber, as he does own PR's of 3:52.22 and 3:34.54 but logic dictates Centro breaks the string.
But the low-budget boys from the Bronx could def give the NOP billion dollar machine a race!!
And they'd both CRUSH the current World Record...
