How many Americans have an 800 pb of sub-1:48 and 10k pb of sub 28:00? Alan Webb, Bernard Lagat, Garrett Heath.... And who?

These threads are one of my favorite things about LRC.

As this poster has pointed out, I think we're limiting our scope by only looking at the sub 28 list. Certainly as we move down to the 1.5k/3k/5k the coulda, shoulda, woulda list would grow.

I think a good 1.5k/3k/5k runner would have a better chance at sneaking under 28 for 10k in their later years (assuming they still cared - Teg as exhibit A) than a 10k runner getting under 1:48.

I would give that Rupp a shot at sub-1:48 but I wouldn't have bet even money on it.

Rupp ran 3:50.92. Heath ran 3:34.12 which converts to 3:51.2. Heath attempted an 800m just about every year from 2007to 2015 and only broke 1:49 that one time when he managed the 1:47.26.

And Heath was much more of a middle distance/speed guy than Rupp. Heath had some hellacious 1500m kicks.

And, other than Heath, who are who talking about who actually did it? Lagat and Webb, two rather special runners who bear no resemblance to most of the absurd "woulda couldas" tossed out in this thread.

Sub-1:48 is no joke.

Add Jim Spivey to the coulda, shoulda, woulda list. Sub 1:50 800 in HS [enroute to 1:50 880] and 15th in NCAA cross country that November.

I did have to look it up for confirmation but in the July 21, 1980 issue of SI, Kenny Moore reports that Tony ran 1:49.5 for 800m for Stanford. As for whether he could have dipped under 1:48 if he had made it his life’s work, I do not know. Regardless, I think we can agree that Tony was a gifted runner.

Very doubtful most of these guys could run sub 1:48.

Rupp 100% could. He pulled out of an 800 where Salazar said he was trying to run 1:45.

Paul Cummings — maybe / yes.

Eric Jenkins — definitely.

Jim Hill — maybe.

Goucher — maybe / yes.

No love for #74 on the list? If it's the same Jonathan Gray then his 800 credentials are beyond reproach! Surely we want to know who has done it, not the hypotheticals...
