Who ya got?
Ultimately I would say Webb. But bump it up to 2400 meters I say rupp.

webb ran under 8:45 for 2 miles in high school and was top 5 at footlocker in XC. would be a great race between the 2 but I think webb beats rupp in a 2k
Couldn't happen. They weren't "both in their prime" at the same time.

It is called a hypothetical question. Like, in their prime who would win in a boxing fight Mike Tyson or Muhammad Ali. I think Alan would win. Rupp never had the kick Webb had. I think Webb if he didn't go overboard, would be the current American record holder from the 1500m to 10000m.
Webb wins at 2k. i'd up the game to 3k and still think Webb would win, but not 5k.
on a muddy xc course, i have webb; flat golf xc course, rupp.
The better kicker which would be Webb. 2k is too short a race for Rupp to run away from Webb.
Prime Webb below 3000. Prime Rupp above 3000. Would love to see prime webb and prime rupp duke it out over 3000... my guess is that Webb would take out the first 1600 in 4:00-4:02, rupp would take over from there, then push really hard from 800 out but webb would get him in the last 100. 7:26.2-7:26.7

For reference Rupp has run 7:30 flat indoors, no chance Webb over 3000m, 2000 would be extremely close imo guess you give Webb the edge as it’s closer to “his” distance, but Rupp is a 3:50 miler himself and more consistent....
Webb beat Rupp in the Carlsbad Turkey Trot 5k.
Rupp had a good view of Webb's back, baby!
if its a race that means absolutely nothing then webb wins easy. if its the olympics the match up doesnt happen because webb doesnt get past the 1st round while rupp cruises into the finals and then medals.
Considering that Webb ran 13:10 in his only real try at 5000m prior to his best year, and Rupp's pr is just 12:58 after many attempts, I think that Webb would beat Rupp at every distance through 5000m, but lose at 10k (Webb wasn't too shabby even there, beating Ritz in 27:34 in his only try).
Webb 1:43.8/3:30/3:46.9/8:11?/13:10/27:34
Rupp 1:49?/3:34/3:50i/8:07/12:58/26:44

This was Webb's last good race and it answers the OPs question.

Yes. You have summarized this fairly well. I would add that Galen does not really like to lead. Galen would be in big trouble against Alan, as Galen would have to try to break Alan. Galen might be able to break Alan at 5000m, but I rather doubt it. IF betting a lot of money, I would take Alan at 5000m and below, and it is especially true if there is no rabbit for Galen to chase. 8000m would be the most interesting race. I think Galen would likely beat Alan, but it would have been closer than many people think, especially with no rabbits.
I would also add that I would have loved to see Said Aouita vs. Galen Rupp at 8000m. At 5000 and below, Aouita wins. At 10000m, Galen wins, but at 8000m, can Galen break Aouita? Without rabbits, I think maybe Aouita hangs on and out kicks Galen. Not sure though.
This is an underrated post. Solid lrc humor here.

"The better kicker which would be Webb."
Sure about this? Never was really impressed with Webb's kick at true world class level - which is why he never won a medal at World or Olympic champs. Sustained pace, yes - but then again Rupp is hardly lacking in that department!

I had a top American miler once tell me candidly while watching Chris Lukezick do some strides at the track the day before a big 1500m race, "i'm not afraid of Webb's kick. the only person in the US who can outkick me is Chris Lukezick. He can get into it in 3-4 steps, while Webb takes 6+. If I'm in front of Webb with 150m to go by 2-3 strides, then I know I can beat him."
so, milermb, i know people who have competed against Webb at the national level who would agree with you.

and this is why I still come to LRC, that's pure gold (and good eye for catching it). I wager at least half the readers of this thread missed it... ;)
