Not insurmountable, but there are no current athletes or anyone in the pipeline who could take a shot at it. For perspective, the previous 3K record was held by Noureddine Morceli who had run 3:27x to set the 1500 world record the year before. In 1994, Morceli ran 7:25, to set the 3K world record. At that time, we thought 7:25 was a solid record and then 2 years later Komen ran 7:20x; it was difficult to make sense of it. There was a rumor that the track was short or the timing equipment malfunctioned. We knew instantly that it was an incredible performance, but perhaps it wasn't until later, when the 3 greatest runners ever, El Guerrouj, Gebrselassie, and Bekele all took a shot at the record and never came close. In fact, they were all so far away from the record, that each of them discounted their attempt. I always thought the record favored a miler and that at a minimum you needed to be a sub-3:30 (1500) type to be able to comfortably run 58-second laps and not feel like you are racing a mile and a sub-13 (5000) endurance to hang on to that pace in laps 6 and 7. Mo Farah and Bernard Lagat fit the bill from a talent/number's perspective, but they never even made a serious attempt.
Personally, I don't think the 3K record is much stronger than the 1500 or 5K record, but athletes are usually training for one or the other, but not the 3K. I don't what Komen's training was leading up to that event, he ran in a couple of races weeks before which by his standards were just OK. An interesting note, the year before, Komen wasn't even picked for the 1996 Kenyan Olympic team.
