To add the discussion, I cannot recall a time I ever asked one of my athletes to slow down. I will, however, explain to each athlete before a workout what their effort level/pacing should be and explain why they are running at that effort/pace. I think it is critical to always explain the purpose of the workout. You won't get kids running too fast (hopefully) if they understand why they are running at a certain effort level for a particular workout.
