Why should low mileage with lots of high speed be more impossible than the high mileage regiment advocated by most people on LRC?
Because the clear majority of distance running is about red blood cell development. You only really get this from running big volume, living at altitude, and/or taking something like EPO. When a guy runs high mileage, we know he is developing his red blood cells. When a guy runs low mileage and succeeds, it makes us scratch our heads as to how he can be that aerobically fit off such low mileage.
"Research on this topic suggests a range of 75-85% of the energy used to run the mile being supplied by the aerobic system, with the more current research tending to be on the higher side. A 5k will be 90-95% aerobic and a 10k will be 95-97% aerobic and a marathon 99% aerobic."
