As rumors have swirled about this fit the last few months, it appears that it's true. Paul Chelimo will be adding the steeple to his repertoire.

He's the best
debut at Payton Jordan maybe? I'm thinking 8:30ish for a debut, paced by teammates.

He's doing the 1500
Very cool. Most runners who've had the success Chelimo's had on the flat would never even consider the steeple. With no Worlds/Olympics this year this is great time to try something new.

May want to check the actual start list.

Do you know anything about the steeple? He should run under 8:20 and win with ease. He’ll run 8:00 this year without a doubt. It’s a smart move really. Kenyan streepling isn’t as strong as it once was so he can get world championship gold. Whereas in the 5k he has zero chance at gold.

Ummmm.....why?

My thoughts exactly. Why? Silver medalist with the gold medalist retiring from the track.

Kip Keino, gold at 1500, silver at 5000 in 1968 got gold at steeple and silver at 1500 in 1972.
I know you said “most” but this exception is remarkable.

8:30 lol who is he.. Andy Bayer?
If Chelimo has any jumping ability, Jager is going to get EXPOSED!!
I like Chelimo and I think it’s great he’s going to try the steeple. But to say that an 8 flat guy like Jager should be afraid of him before he’s ever run one is a bit premature. One centimeter higher on one barrier and Jager in Paris was as good as we have seen in a long time, with the exception of Kemboi at a championship race.
But man, if Chelimo can handle barriers, the US steeple team IS collectively scary.

8:30 would be a horrible debut for someone of his caliber when you consider a 16-year-old Norwegian kid debuted in 8:26 last year.
WTF!!!!! He his not hurdling like a Kenyan.

Yeaaah no, Jager's PR's are faster at every distance. Chelimo running the steeple should be fire tho.

Great performance by Keino. Ben Jipcho did him one better when he won the Steeple, 5K and finished third in the 1500 at the Commonwealth Games in 1974.
Different era though. In the pro era the steeple just doesn't have the cachet (and thus the money) that the flat races do. Jenny Simpson (former American steeple record holder) said it would take $5M for her to go back to the steeple. She was kidding, but not completely. Nowadays, runners turn to the steeple only if they can't make it in a flat event. Jager, for example, wasn't going to make it as a 1500m runner because of his lack of a kick so he turned to the steeple.

You obviously do not understand the sport. You have no doubts that Chelimo will run 8:00 this year? Really? Hank Rono was about as good a runner as Chelimo and he ran 8:05. Maybe Chelimo can eventually run 8:05. That would be excellent for him.
no chance he can beat jager
jager has over a decade of steeple racing and fluidity. chelimo will be a goner after 3 laps
no chnce 5 lovre wrote:

He finished 2nd at Oly in 5k and has more speed than Jager. He can beat him and will.
Except they do all their training at Cheyenne Mountain HS which doesn't have a water jump. And why would the water jump be totally full for a training session if they aren't using it. Photoshop?
