Does anyone know what Kawauchi trains in shoe wise? Also, does he race in the shoes he trains in, as I know Japanese runners are more inclined to run in flats.

The OP.
At the media day he was wearing the newest Asics cumulus 20 ( looks good and quite a change)
For racers he gets different pairs of Japanese made Asics sortie

Yeah, I zoomed in on and enlarged his racers and couldn't figure out what they were. I figured they were a model made in Japan and not sold here.
You can find your own asics sortiemagics and other shoes such as tarther japan on rakuten global market and buyee.jp
Asics on his arm warmers for sure and the shoes look like Asics.
I would say he races in this . Only available in japan.

Yep...But only up to size 11!!! Why?? A majority of bigger sized (13) feet have that higher volume wide foot which is exactly how they craft Asics Japanese Flats
I like modern Japan, one of the things I like most is that the common Japanese walk around in racing flats (seriously they do).

Those are Piranhas. You can get them in the UK. He wasn't racing in those.
But I agree he is probably wearing something only available in Japan. Similar in the UK/US would be the tartherzeal which is the successor to the DC racer. The latest ones in the link below even have Japenese writing on the tongue.

Looks like they used the sole from the old Nike Katannas

Who cares that you don't care?
I was just curious if he trains in flats because ive read on here several times that a majority of Japanese runners do. If not, that’s interesting.
the shoes he was wearing is the sortieMagic RP4 custom.
the custom version is construct on the user requeriments.
i own a comercial version. what dfirence from my own is:
-the sole is the same as SortieMagic SS in Yuki Sortie
-the midsole is bigger (in my opinion is almost impossible running a marathon with the commercial version, i ran yesterday (07/05/2018 a half marathon with the Sortie and my foot and muscles were burning because of the impact.)
-the colors. the user can choose the colors they want.
