Cold, windy, wet misery
Cold, windy, wet misery
Don’t think of it as rain: Think of it as EPO falling from a big syringe in the sky :)
not a good day.
nothing wrong with bailing out of this one.
others have done so, including Yours Truly.
It looks bad but looks can be deceiving.
The weather forecast for MyTown, USA says at the moment it is raining with 100% chance of rain thru the rest of the day.
It is overcast outside and the ground is wet but it is not raining.
So the marathon course may or may not get lucky with only periods of light rain and overcast skies the whole way.
And as long as the wet pavement doesn't turn to ice there shouldn't be a danger in participating in the 2018 Boston Marathon.
anyone else think that system looks a lot like an AT-AT from Star Wars..?
"this is not the marathon you were looking for" [waves hand]
Shaping up to be toughest conditions. I have only run one marathon with 35 mph winds. Lead pack looked like a flock of birds all trying not to be on the edge. Good luck to everyone!
Boston weather can't be that bad as the Boston Red Sox have played their Sunday game at Fenway Park and did not cancel.
It doesn't take that much to cancel a baseball game.
conclusion : if the Red Sox didn't cancel their game then the B.A.A. will not cancel their marathon foot race.
full disclosure : I am not in Boston at the moment so I don't know how bad the weather is there 18 hours before the marathon start.
I'm here, and am running the race tomorrow. I did my shake out this morning, and also went outside about an hour ago to buy a blanket at TJ Maxx.
I think the weather is doable. Not great, but it's not the apocalypse. I am happy to be seeded in 1/8, though. I think those of us in the just-over 3:00 pace group are going to have an easier time than those that are 2:30 or faster.
As someone racing tomorrow, I much prefer this forecast to last year's.

I thought it looked like an abscessed molar.

what did you shake out?
There was a whole lot of shaking going on around the finish line/Hynes Convention Center.
It is not apocalypse, but if the weather tomorrow morning is like now + pouring rain, it is going to be close to as bad as it can get. Wind is gusting so hard it is sometimes difficult to stand. And it comes from east. It is freaking cold and standing at the village for 2+ hours in the pouring rain is not going to be fun.
This is the reason I decided to bail.
That and because I am a wimp when it comes to cold, wet weather.
lots of luck to those with the courage to make the trek to Hopkinton in the morning.
What were the previous worst conditions? I think it was freezing cold the year Bikila dropped out.
When Jones set the WR in '84 in Chicago it looked pretty miserable and I think there were snow flurries early on.
Jesus, I'd take this weather every day over any of the 80+ degree days I've raced there. It won't be that cold and yeah, it will be raining but dress for it. As for the wind, find a pack and work together pulling and drafting, and you will be ok. The only way this wind is really bad is if you somehow find yourself alone or try and run off the front of a pack.
for the elites the weather is okay.
But for the masses who have a long trek after the finish line and a long outdoor wait at the start, it is not pleasant.
I'm trying to imagine waiting in a 45 minute port-a-loo line in Hopkinton in a cold downpour.
I don't see the pluses of taking a 2nd pair of shoes to change into at the start.
If it is raining then the 2nd pair will get waterlogged within a couple minutes.
Although if it is raining during the morning wait but stops before the start then the 2nd pair would definitely help.

This one is better. It's just a bunch of noobs complaining over there.
The Red Sox have already cancelled Monday's Patriot's Day game at Fenway Park due to the cold, heavy rain.
Possibly the B.A.A. should do the same. I have a feeling many runners wouldn't be too disappointed. It is going to be a mess.
We all recall how Rupp had multiple hat changes in Rio. Will he do something like that tomorrow? If it is going to rain that hard tomorrow wouldn't you want to constantly have a dry hat to keep you warm
