So what happened to this kid?
He lost his XC opener:
https://ct.milesplit.com/meets/364148/results/663033/formatted#.XXvzPdVKipoHe's a sophomore and ran 15:46 for his first XC race, finishing 2nd by like, 20 seconds.
Who even remembers the season opener champ unless he also ends up being the state champ by the end. It's better to be 2nd at the opener an 1st at the regional race, the kids probably not trying to flame out since he's probably targeting nationals this year.
This isn’t new the Sherry twins are really talented. Gavin beat Aidan even in 8th grade during middle school xc championships. And this was when he didn’t run track and I believe was also still playing soccer. Pure talent and came into the sport later.
I know all sorts of TUEs are allowed for breathing trouble but actually changing your last name to reflect that seems pretty arrogant.

Puffer is a "WR holder" for 5000 and is now 0-5 in high school XC versus Sherry, who is in the same grade.
Is he the next great American distance hope, or is he going to burnout too early?
Puffer's 191 at the Manchester Invite is currently #12 nationally.
Sherry's 188 at the Ocean State Invite is #39.
Head to head is all that matters and Sherry's got his number in that department. Puffer's great at maintaining a pace. Sherry's downright devastating in a sprint finish. We'll see who comes out on top next Saturday, but my money's on Sherry.
Even worse, an Olympic champion got 7th in a small high school race:
7 Vebjoern Roeed 12 Conard High 16:25.00 7

Well actually the point with the ratings was to show that both sophomores have a good shot at going to nationals this year.
Their next matchup should be a good one.
They're going to quake in their shoes now that Puffer is here!

Would not be surprised if this kid is out of running by age 18. Letsrun fan boys love to overhype these phenoms and wonder what happened. They got older or injured and lost the passion. That's what happened.

Kid has run 14:47 but his best 1600 is only 4:25. 4:25 is good for a freshman but clearly this kid is not balanced. These dumb coaches need to work on speed.
I don't get why so many coaches think speed at a young age is bad. High mileage, long tempo runs, and racing a ton are the WORST thing you can do to a young talented runner.
Will he even survive high school or be burned out?
I don't put a lot of stock in age group phenoms.
He’s got great technique. He’s not an age group phenom- he’s a sophomore who ran 14:47 5K on the track last spring. I think he will continue improving.
Tinman has just posted a detailed look at Puffer's training in this thread:
I buy what Tinman is selling.
