I used to keep it by the check in until someone stole $75 and my pants at the ETSU indoor meet back in 2010.

Keep everything in the glove compartment of the rental car. Stash the car keys in a random bush where no one will ever think to look.
I mainly do local races and just leave everything in my car. I did boston and some bigger races, but we have a team car that has handled it for me.
3 easy steps:
-Leave stuff in car
-Bring smaller spare key instead of clicker key
-Put car key in tiny hip pocket of shorts
Or, bring someone to watch you race and give them your backpack.

I'm sure squirreling something away at a major race will not look suspicious. Better to carry the single car key in the little pocket all shorts have. I usually tie mine to the drawstring of my shorts.
Either in the hotel or in the team van. If it is important stuff we need to keep on our person but can be stolen, like credit card, cell phone, or medication, we usually give it to a team mate who isn't racing.
In my car. I put my car key in one of those magnetic key boxes under my vehicle. Simple.
Flip Belt
I have a military grade completely enclosed waterproof arm wrap that i put my full size ipad in (i don't like the ipad mini) and wear it on my left arm so that i can listen to netflix while i run in my Beats headphones (they are bluetooth so the cord doesn't get in the way). I keep my Samsung notebook, wallet with some cash, keys, passport, state ID, Road ID, insurance card, credit card, spare battery power block, and Gu packs in my water bottle belt. It has four smaller water bottles instead of one big one to distribute the weight equally. I have to take turns sipping water from each bottle to maintain proper balance of weight. In the race to be a champion, there is no finish line.
De same place I keep de champagne.
