For the past 2-3 years I have struggled with various lower leg issues. I've tried everything from stretching, pt orthotics, PRI, heavy weights, low weights, graston, massage, ART, etc but things always seem to cause a problem as I get into any decent type of mileage. As a result of these years being filled with injuries I have wound up doing a lot of cycling as a means of cross training. It just dawned on me the other day that maybe I should stop resisting the flow of things and just start doing 2-3 hard runs a week to give myself time to recover and actually get to a place where I can maintain my health and speed. The other days would all be cross training.
In HS I would have considered myself a mid distance runner with a 4:19 1600, 1:57 800, and 15:50 5k in cross. I'm in a division 1 school and have only managed to run 1 lousy 5k in cross since I got here. I've been ready to step away from the sport for a while but this idea has got me thinking about taking another route to stay with it. I plan on talking about this with my coach later.
Has anyone had experience training seriously with this type of schedule / does anyone have advice?
