if you can run a 53 or 54 second 400m on the next lap, yes, definitely.

For about 1 or 2 years
i run 45.8 and i'm a bum
Only if you plan on moving up to 5000 or 10000 meters.
Can OP make a decent amount of money if he/she runs 49.85 for the 400m?
Well, SHE might be shrews enough to parlay that into a shoe sponsorship deal.
If HE has a 49.85 on his resume, he might be able to swiftly flee the scene of a bank heist. There's decent moolah to be made in bank heists by fast 400m runners rushing to nearby getaway cars! That is, if an exploding dye pack doesn't spoil the party.
You, too, can be a millionaire wrote:

Ugh, yeah, that "shrewd", not "shrews"; not a Freudian slip, just a typo.
Yes! I only ran 52. and I make 6 figures now.
the OP scenario SPECIFICALLY asks for a 'decent' amount of money
No money is less than a decent amount.
I run 51.27 for 400, make 400k per year and date a playmate. So yes, it is possible.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention - I ran that 51.27 on the last lap of my 3:52 mile.

The figures after the decimal don't count, fyi.
LOL! 3 52...pathetic, that doesn't even approach the ~3 41 WR that we all know is what you need. Don't forget that the dude who ran that mile was also credited with ~44.0, ~1.38.9, and ~3.24....
I ran 46 and ended up with a few million dollars.
Of course it took me years to save and invest while I busted my ass up the corporate ladder. If I'd just focused on the corporate run, instead of running, I'd likely be walking a lot better than I do now. But the preparation and the sacrifice to race that hard, was what set me apart from the rest of the wannabees in business.
So unless you're a girl, or 12 year old boy, 49.5 will get you nowhere. In fact 46 won't do it anymore. I was luckier in the early 70's
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
