Scholarship standards for D1

Full scholarships are not really a thing unless you are an international student or a sub-world class athlete. Most schools will take walk ons as they do not cost the school anything for them to be on the roster. My recommendation is that unless you are able to compete on a national level (top 15-20 at NXN or Footlocker or being invited to New Balance Nationals) it is a mistake to go to a DI school. I believe that it is more beneficial to go to a DII or DIII school and be able to make an impact on the team and helping the team win titles.

So only 20 guys from the US should go to D1 schools? Ok.

I think he meant that unless you're a national class athlete there are a lot of benefits to going to a smaller school where you are viewed more as an individual than a face in the crowd. Schools like that tend to develop talent pretty well.

Yeah this is not true whatsoever don't listen to this guy. Plenty of guys that don't even make footlocker or nxn go on to have more successful college careers than the guys who got top 15-20.

U of Michigan has 8:50 for a full ride, so they are a thing (we'll see a few kids run that this year) and I know Hoey and a few other guys are well under their 800m standard for a full.

Second, you are stupid and it's hard to take anyone who says only like 40 kids should go D1 each year seriously.

Most schools should have some form of standards on their websites. Cross marks help, but most coaches are looking at track times because they are a lot more black and white in that everyone runs on the same 400m track whereas XC marks can really differ. You want to look at what schools the kids might be interested in. Then investigate from there.

Here are the 100% full athletic scholarships I have handed out this year, am Mid-Major Conference. I have to contend with two (2) NCAA qualifying programs in my state which kids are willing to walk-on for and not accept a full ride at my program. So, I give full rides to the best talented kids I can get and develop them over 4 years.

Male, signed early, 2 x Top 7 State Finisher XC, multiple invitational winner, 9:42 best 3200m as JR, 15:17 XC as SR

Female, signed early, 2 x Top 7 State Finisher XC, locally dominant, banking on 5:15/11:20 potential as SR

Male, signed early, 1 x Top 7 State Finisher XC, late bloomer, 4:25 1600m, 15:38 XC as SR.. banking he's a sub-30:00 10K guy

With only 12.6 to spread around between 50 guys, your overall track team must be weak or you are a distance only school. Even then, it's hard to give full rides. I have a son who hasn't signed anywhere yet because he has no offers even though his track times from junior year are significantly faster than the guys you mentioned. He is hoping to run 4:10 and 9:00 early enough this track season to get some interest. He has been in contact with many power 5 schools and some smaller schools. The Ivies were very interested but at full fare. Our combined income is about $240k. He wanted to attend Notre Dame but they didn't respond to his requests.

Hitting those times doesn't mean that you will get a full ride. Those are just the standards required to be eligible for a full ride. Michigan is in a position right now where they have no scholarships available and have many guys capable of running 8:00 for 3k already. Call them with an 8:50 right now and they will give you the remaining 1/4 scholarship they have available.

Wow. Listen, it's about expectations. I ran 9:30 and had several DI scholarship offers ranging from books to 100% full ride. Based on my family's economic situation, I turned down tuition and books at a couple Power 5 schools and accepted a full at a mid-major conference. I never regretted it because I beat all my peers that went to the Power 5's in college because they burnt out, got injured, or lost interest. I ended up being a border line All-American.

You can either go to Notre Dame as a walk-on or get a full ride to the 50 lowest performing DI programs in the country, which might be pretty dang good academically. Go to TFRRS and check out the programs that have 16:00 5Ks this indoor season. There are tons of schools that would give your son a full ride. I could get him one if you need help (former coach, lots of connections).

Many schools publish standards. They are only standards, not guarantees. Men's teams normally have restrictions on roster size. Some real ball park times for Power 5 distance programs are:

Walk-on 1/4 1/2

800 1:54 1:52 1:50

1600 4:20 4:10 4:05

3200 9:25 9:05 8:55

What are his ACT/SAT and GPA? Preferred course of study?

Those times should absolutely result in some level of offer. A full-ride is a fairly rare occurrence unless it is an academic and athletic combo. Notre Dame has arguably the best recruiting class in the nation this year.

35 ACT and National merit so he is strongly considering a few of the big national merit programs. Ok and Ok st. Coaches didn’t respond even though he would have been free to their programs. Kentucky coach was interested. Didn’t check Texas tech or Alabama. Many colleges are free tuition for national merit. No athletic scholarship from any of a bunch of power 5 schools though and we went through identical situation 2 years ago with his brother. Both times, we contacted around 25 schools. The largest offer that his brother got athletically was 1/4 at a small college. It is frustrating to see posts that there are full rides for distance runners. I can provide a lengthy list of schools who are not providing scholarships to distance runners unless they hit 9:00 and 4:10 type times.

This is 100% true. Never won a state title, or made a national event but had competitive times. Chose a mid major full ride over a few nationally ranked teams offering walk on spots. Couldn’t be happier with my decision.

kid from PA: Just because that is what it says on their website doesn't mean if you run 8:49 you are going to get a full scholarship. Read what the page says carefully-

"Used to consider" is the key phrase
