Well. Lots of useless venom on here, but to answer the original question, just sign up and go give it a try. You’ll do OK or you won’t but there is really only one way to know.
Having run 30:odd for 10000, 9 flat steeple and 5:34 for 50M, I’d say they’re all equally hard, just in different ways.
My theory is that, done right, every race from 2 mile on up entails equal suffering, distributed over different periods.
50 milers ARE VERY difficult if people like you do them. You are legit. Same with Sage and others. Seriously, LRC folks have no problem with people honestly running and competing ultras. It's tough. I have a ton of respect for guys who can run that fast that far.
What most LRC people have issues with are people who are mostly walking/hiking 50 miles, finishing (maybe) inside the ridiculous cut off time, and then acting like they are some hero who did an amazing thing last weekend. I know several people like this with their buckles, mugs, hats, medals, etc. just for finishing. Absolute fools.
My perspective is that if you can't run an entire race (minus walking at aid stations...fueling is a whole other necessary component to ultras. I have no problem walking there.), then don't call it a running race. The truth is there are many in the ultra world looking for affirmation and find it by "completing" ultras. It honestly waters down the accomplishments of others. That's my perspective, anyhow.
