She is not Jamaican (not really!), at least not in the way we think of being an American. Briana was born and raised in the USA. Her mother is Jamaican, which by decent, under Chapter two of the Jamaican Constitution, 'persons born outside Jamaica of Jamaican parents have an automatic right to Jamaican citizenship'. To the best of my knowledge, Jamaica has played absolutely no role in her development as an athlete. Of course, as a 15-year old, her choice of track & field national allegiance is not hers, even though her parent(s) and coach(s) will say it's her choice. Kids by and large want to please their parents and will make choices that suit their parents. Personally, I would never allow my kids at age 15 to make lifelong decisions. The problem for Briana Williams is this never fully works out; she will never be fully embraced by Jamaicans or Americans.
I wish this kid good luck and I will follow Briana because in my mind she is an Amercian. If it seems like I am taking a shot at a kid; I just don't like athletes at any age who are born and raised in one country, yet choose to represent another country because it's the birthplace of a parent.
