The fastest 1600m split of the weekend across all divisions goes to David Ribich of Western Oregon. He took the baton in 8th with a 7-8 second deficit and brought his team back to first on the 300m track at Pitt State.
My split probably isn’t exactly right because it was tough to see where the line was within the exchange zone, but it should be close, and I had Ribich at 3:55.1. Anyone else get a split on him?
He ran it perfectly. Stayed patient and was around 58 mid at 400, 2:28.xx at 1200, and pretty sure his last 300 was around 41 mid. Impressive race - it’ll be interesting to see how he approaches the 3k tomorrow.
Fastest DMR 1600 Split of NCAA Championship Weekend

He was chasing some quality teams including Adams State with Elias Gedyon on the anchor and rolled them all up from wayyyyyy back. He would be a contender in DI, backed by his performance at the US outdoor champs last summer.
Also worth noting that the DII 5000m was absolutely ridiculous with huge surges thrown in by Ngandu and followed by Sydney Gidabuday, with Ngandu dropping a 44 sec 300m from 4100-4400m. Way crazier than the DI snooze fest. -

If Ribich was a 21 year old freshman - who didn't have such pale skin - he'd have at least three threads put up by various SJW types yakking about how awesome he is. -
Wow. How slow were the other legs? His team finished in 9:41.4 with a 3:55.1 final leg? Talk about a one man team.
-
I had him at 3:55.3... Their 800 leg ran 1:55 and is what created most of the gap
-
The 1200 leg went out slow, as is common at nationals. Also this is DII, so they probably didn't have a ridiculous split in the 400-800.
-
Western Oregon's web site says that his leg was "sub 3:57". I think that it's unlikely that it was 3:55.1. I also saw the video of the last 50m of the race. He was looking right and left and did not look completely tanked. Again, unlikely to be a 3:55.1.
-
Nah. It's just that no one gives a sh*t because real nationals are also this weekend

Do you have any other evidence of why it is unlikely to be 3:55 low other than Western Oregon’s site? It’s not unreasonable at all. He’s a 3:58 high miler, so he’s in a little better shape, running start, people to chase, running 1600 instead of 1609. I did not only watch the last 50m of the race on video, but I was at the meet and timed him myself and someone else had him only two tenths off from what I had. I’d only give it a half second margin of error from what I had him at. -
What more evidence do you need than his coach who would try to be generous in whatever he wrote about the race? If the coach times him in 3:55.1, they probably would have written sub 3:55.
-
So a 3:55 1600 is about a 3:57 mile, factor in the running start and a pack ahead you get to chase and it’s about a 3:58.

Agreed on the 5k, except it was actually 3800-4100m that Ngandu dropped a 44, so even crazier. It was like he was just trying to test Gidabuday early in the race by throwing in surges every other lap. When he felt Sidney still on him, he’d swing wide, make him take the lead, and then try again on the next lap. Then he seemed to be saving up for that massive surge with 1200m to go and just couldn’t quite hold his gap to the finish. Props to Sidney for not giving up. He looked like he was hurting pretty bad with 2-3 to go and was even nearly a straightaway behind, but hung in there just enough and thrived off of the energy in the crowd for him. -

Wrong. He doesn’t have threads because he’s in D2 and nobody’s heard of him. If he was in D1, then maybe people would have at least know his name. But maybe not, since he wouldn’t be much of a standout. In any case, you are a moron. -

You must have a miserable outlook on life if this is your response to an otherwise positive thread. Why is your default always race/color...or just plain negativity? You've got a loooong life ahead of you unless you change that $h!t. -
This is awesome except for the fact that this is taking place on a 300m track. That’s just lame.

If you are right, then the article is stupid. Saying that someone ran sub 3:57, when he actually ran 3:55.1 is completely misleading. There is a world of difference between the two.
If he didn't run faster than 3:56.6 however, then the Utah State guy ran the fastest split yesterday. -
If you’ve ever worked with SID’s, you’d know that there are lots of them that are clueless when it comes to track and field. I can’t speak for Western Oregon’s though.
Either way, there’s no way I was more than 1.5 seconds off with Ribich’s split to beat the Utah State guy’s 3:56.6. I know the facility very well, and although I didn’t have a perfect view of the start line, I know the area close enough.
Another interesting fact, the Western Oregon 1200+400 split a 3:50 together, so Ribich wasn’t far off of that. -
Who won the 1200 leg because Staines looked ridiculously easy running 1.50 in his 800 heat.
-
Staines absolutely smashed the 1200m leg. Made it look easy
-
I heard 3:54.6 split. You couldn't even see him for a while. I thought he was gonna get 3rd place until he starting really closing the last 250m. I have also seen him run 1:50 and it looked like he was out on a jog. Give him some credit
