I think it depends on what an individual's priorities are and what he or she values in life.
The cool thing about this country is that everyone gets to value whatever it is they choose to value.
If the top of your value list looks like:
Spouse, children, schools, space, peace, welllllll NYC is not really a good home for you.
If the top of your value list looks like:
Career, friends, social life, competitive running scene, action, art, epicurean adventures, love life, sex life, maybe kids but maybe not, wellllllllll NYC might be right up your alley.
It's all good whatever you choose to value and it's all good wherever you choose to life. There's a place for pretty much everyone in the country.
People that get angry about other people's choices (either NYC people criticizing the hinterlands, or non-city people criticizing the godless big apple) would benefit from a bit of self-reflection on why it is they are so angry.
