Guys, if you haven't realized by now, being a hobby jogger is not about time. We don't care how slow someone is. We chastise them because of the things they do and say, their ignorance, or laziness. Slow times just happen to correspond with those people. All hobby joggers are slow, but not all slow people are hobby joggers.
Precisely. It's being slow and being self-righteous/having conviction about it, and a certain lack of respect for those faster than you.
Take my dad. He is old and slow. He knows it and doesn't brag. Actually, don't think he refers to himself as a runner. He just runs for fitness sometimes, and does races to challenge himself.
Even though he is slow, he does train with serious intent (runs of 10-12km, does interval workouts to prepare for races, does core/weights). He just runs in a singlet, shorts and hat, no gadgets. He was a serious athlete in his younger days in other sports (football, skiing), so he has that mindset still, even though result isn't there with distance running. Being a serious athlete at any point in one's life (in any sport) gives one respect for the process, if you will.
Many of the people in the races he does that beat him are HJs, and they annoy the crap out of him lol.
