What do you listen to while you run?

This is the one pet peeve people have here that just cracks me up, every time. I have two kids and a full-time job. On that kind of schedule, listening to current events podcasts or music during my runs is a great way to kill two birds with one stone. I'd feel like I was being pretty inefficient if I weren't listening to something. Why wouldn't I? I can maintain an 8-8:30 pace pounding out some miles and catch up on the week's NBA news. It's really not that difficult.

All of that being said, I do get slightly annoyed at people who worship at the altar of distance. "I ran a 15-minute 5K." (I didn't really, but stay with me.) "5K?! That must be easy for you! I saw you on Facebook that you ran 15 miles the other day!"

Seriously, people that run while listening to music must enjoy getting hit by cars.

I won a road mile race three years in a row. Every year some of my "friends," people running the 5K said it was short. How would they know and why would they say something like that within earshot of me???

Spoil sports that's what they are. I was a DII 1500 meter runner in college, and at the age of

36 could probably still run under 5 minutes for a mile. In fact my winning time the last year was

4:49. I suggest they were envious. Even if it was short I also won by 100 meters or more.

These guys ran in those road races every year. If they were so smart why didn't they come out and race against me?

I run on a path specifically paved for running. No vehicles allowed. It's not an issue.

For some reason, it is considered some kind of badge of badassery here to run without headphones. It's so silly. Your time is your time.

However you should NOT allow swearing (or suggested swearing) for the original post (Subject).

I understand not being able to eliminate all posts because people are using !*% type marks to form swearing, violent, sexist, or vulgar expressions or words.

Do not allow it in the OP Subject please. That you can control and it makes LRC look better.

Besides why do you want society to continue it's downward trend. Let's have a little respect for each other.

I own a running store and have a chick who is as tall as she is wide, total 240 lb waddler. Never broken 6.5 hours for 26.2 but shows up at every group run talking about her next race "just going to use it as a training run, trying to get a Boston Qualifier later in the year" (she needs to shave over 2 hours off her PR to get that BQ) and BTW, she is begging me to get her a Vaporfly 4%

Guy I am cruising by on local path: "are you getting ready for the [insert local race name] 10K?"

Me (who hasn't raced in years): "no, just enjoying the day"

Guy: "some other race, then?"

Me: "nope, just running"

Guy (now shouting): "what?!? you should run it, you'd win!"

Me (to myself, knowing I'd beat 95% of the field but be several minutes behind the winners): "those days are long past"

ALSO

on well-lit path: "you need to be careful out here, where is your headlamp and reflective gear?"

It's also weird to have a complex about the fact that people who didn't run competitively, on a team, in high school or college get into the sport after high school or college. It's a sport that lends itself to an adult's lifestyle. You don't need teammates. You don't need money. You don't even need daylight. Plus, it gives your fitness regimen some form and incentives.

I always admire anybody overweight who runs or tries to run long distance. I dont know about you but I sure as hell couldnt complete 26.2 with 100lbs of weight strapped to me. Try it and see how many hours it takes. Guarentee it would be over 5.

Pretty sure running fast does not mean you are a superior human being.

It just means you can run fast.

I've known some really great people who are top runners. Also, some real a-holes, psychopaths, and drunks. And, a few people who get off on insulting people who are not fast runners, a sure sign of low self-esteem, and a mark of someone you don't want your kid to couple up with (who wants a jerk for an in-law?)

I half-understand the annoyance with people who seem to think that everyone who runs is a "runner," and credits someone who runs a 2:40 marathon the same as someone who runs a 5:30 marathon. (Heck, it seems the 5:30 marathoners are feted to a greater degree at times.)

But what gets me is this silliness that if you didn't run in high school or college, on the team, then you can never call yourself a runner. I played in a men's baseball league in my 20s. Some of my friends who never played in high school on the team, as I did, ended up being better than me. One guy never even played Little League. It's great to have run in high school and college. You should be proud and cherish those experiences. But, ultimately, your time is your time.

Guys, if you haven't realized by now, being a hobby jogger is not about time. We don't care how slow someone is. We chastise them because of the things they do and say, their ignorance, or laziness. Slow times just happen to correspond with those people. All hobby joggers are slow, but not all slow people are hobby joggers.

There is a difference between hobby joggers and people who actually run or train in some serious manner.

Hobby joggers are those that think breaking 4 hours is fast for a marathon. That sub 20 is fast for a 5k. That they need to have the latest and greatest gear, and they believe it will make them run faster. Hobbyjoggers are the people you see with fuel belts or hydration packs out on a 6 mile "long run" on flat ground.

Need any more examples?

Ha, that was funny, Honest Joe might be a real runner, but that Gregtucker guy is a pretty funny hobby yogger!

The word has probably spread far and wide of the debacle that was the 2016 Via Marathon. The bulk of the race front runners were held captive for up to 10 minutes waiting for a train to pass at a train crossing. Unfortunately, I was part of this spectacle as I watched in partial disbelief that some runners would be desperate enough to actually jump on to the moving train to get across. The race organizers were quick to pass blame on the railroad, citing a few email communications 3 months before the race as confirmation that no trains would be running. For such a crucial element to both runner safety and race integrity, how about getting a confirmation on the matter the week before the race?? Hard lesson learned at the expense of those who trained for months and paid to participate in this event. So no amount of regret or 'I'm sorries' from the race organizers will grant my forgiveness.

I've been listening to music while running for almost 40 years and have never been hit by a car. Those little tiny ipod shuffles are much better than carrying a cassette player during 10 mile runs on country roads in the early 80s.

Jobbyhoggers annoy with their ridiculous "Kudos" of my 5 mile run at 8:30 pace. Get a life jobby hogger cuz I ain't giving you return kudos on that stupid hot yoga session that you posted on Strava. And knock it off with the selfies.
