Those ARE too shabby. Those are abysmal results. I feel bad for the guy and hope he is enjoying himself and getting healthy again but let's not lie to ourselves here and pretend he's running well. He's not.
He has run 4:10 in the mile indoors so far this season. Assuming that was not a really tactical race, then you're right and it isn't a great result for his talent level.
He also has run 1:19 on a moderately slow track indoors this year. That is a pretty reasonable result, probably equivalent to about 1:49 to 1:50 on the same track, so about 1:47 to 1:48 outdoor fitness right now.
In other words, he seems to be attempting to regroup. Maybe it will work out for him, maybe it wont, but I wouldnt judge his results too harshly. Lets see what he does outdoors, if he is healthy now through then, he may be back on track.
