Now, the specific scholarship you received may indeed have included verbiage about "recognition of academic excellence" or whatever; but the amount you received was calculated based on family finances. That is, if you attended one of the eight Ivy League member schools.
Similarly, the "national" scholarship that I received from my Ivy spoke of "leadership and academic promise," yadda, but still was based on my family's (limited) income--if my folks had made more, I'd have gotten less.
