A lot of these guys should have been much faster than they ended up.
What would you expect a 9:00 3200m kid to run after 4 years of D1 training and competition? Especially kids that ran something like 35-45 mpw in HS. They recruit a handful of these every year and then somehow reverse their progression.
It's amazing how UofM consistently takes undertrained 17 year olds running 4:10 1600m/9:00 3200m and four years later they are running slower. There's obviously something very wrong here.
For people that are familiar with the caliber athletes that sign for UofM the failure to produce is unfathomable. Kids who didn't have a chance getting signed for UofM go out of state and run much faster than the guys were beating them easily a year earlier.

Bartnik was injured for how long? Also chose to retire before the end of his eligibility...
Torchia almost transferred and from what I heard, did not adhere to the training too closely in his last years. Don't think he's a great example.
How did Gagnons career finish? Burnt out, didn't use the rest of his eligibility.
Mitch hechsel, Nate roese, goaner Deng, all trained under Thornton.
Don't know much about Vega, Hutton ran pretty solid but also had a rough end to his senior year (despite prs that year).
So I'm not sure what your point is with these examples.
Also please understand, all these guys are great individuals with tons of work ethic and for the vast majority, great attitudes. If their careers didn't end well for this many promising athletes, I don't think it was coincidental.

Here's a fun story for y'all. Two years ago, Plasencia lets his own kid on the team. I know Alex and he's a good guy, but he is MUCH slower than any other recruit they've had in recent history. Usually you have to be a top 5 guy in the state to get a look from Plas, where Alex was outside of the top 60!! yes, 60!! in cross his senior year.
77th at the state meet
I went to the U of M for a little whilebut didn't graduate. the out of state tuition was too expensive
Isn't the Lake District three or four miles away from the Campus?
I remember running a little towards St Anthony's Falls from campus but it's all roads.
I think one thing I was always impressed by the state was that it was the most active state in the country even with the winter. People there really value exercise.
Also worth noting: I did interview the coach in 2004 for the school newspaper. He seemed friendly. Not sure if it was the same guy
