Courses back then were notionally mismeasured. Usually short.

Yes agreed 1983 New York had spectacular depth (considering that my local hobby jogger marathon is won these days in 2:23-24, some 91 were faster in NY in 1983).
In 1981 the Americans did not have the assistance of the Nike Vaporfly 4% to take minutes off of their finishing time.
its boston. The course has been the same for years. The start and finish lines etched into the streets
About 300 finishers under 2:30. Do we even have that many finishers under 2:30 each year at all US marathoners?

Yea, and nobody takes the tangents like they used!
Nice post, OP.
Longtime Cherry Blossom race director with a sub-2:31 for 326th place.
326, Philip Stewart, Alexandria, 2:30.50
Damn. 767th with a 2:38...
Was 1981 a "Tailwind year"?
In those days there was less CO2 in the atmosphere.

Phil was much faster than that in his earlier years.

Care to elaborate?

Yes, Boston has remained a point to point course but the start and finish have not been painted on the ground forever. 1982 duel in the sun they made a right on Hereford with clock showing 2:07:39, made a left on Boylston with clock at 2:08:16. Finish time 2:08:48. So 32 seconds from left on Boylston to the finish.
See video link 1
When Meb won the race (see video link 2) he has already made the turn onto Boylston and clock shows 2:07:03, so lets use 2:07:00. He finished in 2:08:36, so 96 sec he took to run from the last left turn to the finish.
It is hard to admit that an old course may have been measured short, but it is harsh reality that many could have been. The current rules for course measurement/certification are very strict and they were not in place in the late 70s and early 80s. So to say the Boston course has remained exactly the same since 1981 is false. These videos make it very clear that at a minimum have had a different finish line.
