Local blue collar guy Matt Pelletier has a listed 5k PR of 14:36. Not sure when that was from. During a lot of marathon build-ups where he has hit the standard his road times seem to be in the 14:50-15:30 range.

we've probably met before
What sort of training do these guys do? That is, how do guys who only have roughly 14:30 or slower 5K speed train for a 2:19 marathon?
Thanks for all the replies. Great stuff and very promising.
I currently have 15:41 (road)/2:28 PRs and have dreams of hitting the OTQ. I can fathom getting down under 15 on the track, but I cannot imagine running much better.
This thread has boosted my confidence that maybe, just maybe, I can get to 2:18:59 at CIM 2019. Thanks, LRC.

I imagine lots of miles and not a lot a shorter stuff that leads to fast 5k times.
Not peaking to race a 5k is the other trick? No formula is exact but the 2:20 == 30 min is in the ballpark. Some people go a couple mins faster. Some slower. Sort of depends what your best distance is.
Realistically yo do the training and see what happens. No one can say how you will respond to 18 months of Marathon training if you can do things like up the volume, stay injury free, and do my more and more quality work.
I guess it depends on the runner, I know a guy who ran, 3:50 (1500m), 13:54, 29:30, 1:03:5x, and 2:17.3x all in the span from April to December of this year.
