You don't know ANYTHING. There is minimal correlation between vertical jump and sprint times. If you knew anything you would know that biarticular muscles are evolved for sprinting and not jumping. "You need hops for an explosive start out of the blocks." LOL

I don't think Bolt has a great vertical jump. Most elite sprinters don't.

I agree with what you said about height and sprinting - I mean, people were saying that there was going to be influx of 'big men' in the mile/1500 when John Walker was ascendant, so I guess this (wrong) idea is nothing new.

But, please get your head out of the sand regarding Bolt being clean. Jamaica went years without out of competition testing. Given the Jamaican Federation's lack of respect for the rules, I think it's only fair to assume that Bolt was doping while out of competition.

What I think you may be able to work out is, that although stride length might not be as high his rate is higher! if he can maintain the rate for longer there is a very strong chance indeed, though I predict a 9.67 this year

Some sprinters have good vertical jumps. Tyson Gay didn't know what his vertical jump even was, which is why he said "I'm not exactly sure. I want to say 40 something." He doesn't know because his coaches didn't have him jumping like that in training, because it doesn't contribute to his performance. Dwain Chambers was doped to his eyeballs (remember his suspension as part of the BALCO scandal) so yes I would expect he could vertical jump even 56" (some athletes can vertical jump that high). Most elite sprinters have verticals in the 29" - 36" range.

I'm not going to try and PROVE you wrong. It's impossible to prove anything by typing on an online forum.

I can tell you that there have been many sprinter/ long jumpers as well as sprinter/ football players. Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis, Bob Hayes, Bo Jackson, Percy harvin , etc, etc. To my knowledge though, there have not been any standout sprinter/ high jumpers or sprinter/ basketball players at an Olympic or even NCAA level.

Regarding your claims about Tyson Gay and Dwain Chambers jumping ability, id point out that vertical jump tests are performed so differently that they are inherently unreliable for all but the most basic evaluations. Self reported results, even from accomplished athletes, should be disregarded entirely as a rule. See Gerry Lindgren and his 16:04 4 mile XC race.

Do all great sprinters have incredible explosive power? Of course. Does this explosive power always lead to incredible leaping ability. No. Jumping ability is most directly linked to the length of an athlete's achilles tendon and isn't strongly associated with the turnover and speed endurance necessary to run a worldclass 100m time.

Most world class sprinters probably have legit vertical jump abilities in the athletic 30-36 inch range but it stands to reason that the super springy type 40-45 inch vertical athlete would have a tougher time putting that power down 4.5 times a second for 45 strides.

Search usain bolt dunk compilation on youtube. With a running start he gets his fingertips 8 or 9 inches above the rim on his best dunks. On a lot of the dunks, he's actually pulling the rim down to get the ball in. Most of these clips are from 2008-2010, by the way.

At 6'5 Bolt can touch 8'5" flat footed at the very least. That means Bolt is getting 28-30 inches of vertical using a springy basketball court and a running start.

Even if you let Bolt train for a vertical test and put money on the line, no way does he or did have a 40 inch vertical.
