After actually reading through the examples, it seems that 13:50-14:00 capability is probably needed.

Of course he could break 60, ludicrous to suggest otherwise for a guy who could average 65.92 per 400 in a 5k.
5k PRs are not able to run marathons.

I'm pretty sure Brian Sell broke 14-min for 5km at Hansons...maybe not by much though.
He also ran like 29:00-28:50s for 10km in college I believe.
Still, he was a beast training 165-170mpw at his peak and averaging 5:40 pace on his easy days before running 2:10 and making the Olympics.
Toughest guy that I've ever run with (behind)...even after his prime.
The guys at Hansons are very tough in general, but Brian was just at a different level and didn't seem to get hurt/overtrained.
Yuki Kawauchi has a 2:08:14 marathon pr and has a 5k pr of just 13:58
Sell not listed on Hansons top-5k performance list for road or track. Slowest road time to make the list is 14:03 and on the track is 13:48.
So very possible he cracked 14 on the track but not faster than 13:48.
Be interested to see slowest 5k PRs to go sub-2:19 as well. I'm not sure how different it should look if 2:10 runners are at a minimum in the (sub)13:50-14:15ish range.
^^^ Desi has gotta have one of the fastest marathons for her 5k/10k/half PRs. That's pretty awesome. And even if we go with wind aided/Boston, her other times still look to be on the fast side.

Bong-ju Lee
2:07:20 marathon
Boston Marathon winner
Olympic silver
10K pr is 29:44 as listed in iaaf profile
i read somewhere his 5k pr wasn't even close to breaking 14 minutes. couldn't find an official result.
but found an interview of him saying he focused on trying to get his speed up in 2005 so he was able to PR in 10k and 5k that year. the 10k that year was 29:44.
he was just able to hold his pace for so long but just didn't have leg speed.
clearly built for marathon. but even then, a real anomaly in terms of how specialized he was for the marathon.

It's hard to believe someone can run 65.9 400m pace for 12.5 laps, but can't break 60 for one
checked around a bit more so added his 5k pr that I could find.
Bong-Ju Lee

Olympics silver
29:44 10k pr
14:44 5k pr
Well, Galen Rupp is a 2:06 guy with a 12:58 (on a short track so I would round it up to ~14:10) for a hypothetical sub-2:07.

He wasn't that slow, 13:34 for 5k to 2:07:51 at Boston. But he didn't have a kick. Ran about 57 for the last 400 at Rotterdam to beat Lopes which is near his best 400 but that was gradual speeding up.

Sell and Linden and pretty much every Hanson runner that buys into their strength program for 5 or 6 years will always surpass what they run for shorter distances. Mike Morgan has run 2:14 and could not run 2:05 800 or 4:20 for the mile.

Hansons training sucks, a guy in Japan who works a nine to five job beats all of their top runners. Yuki Kawauchi for the win.
Also, just because your training is crazy and have some crazy workouts does not equal to good performances. Look at Eliud Kipchoge training log nothing crazy, or out of this world but it has produced crazy fast times.
