Did you run a 4:20? Did you win a state title? Congrats! Honestly. That is a huge accomplishment and you should be wicked happy about it. I never did it.
Now, even though you won a title in your division, it does not mean you are D1 material. Unless this was your first year running and you're only doing 15mpw, 4:20 simply isn't fast enough to be a successful D1 athlete. Too often parents tell their kids "you are D1 stuff, you can get a scholarship" when in reality, teams give out few scholarships and they're giving them to kids making footlocker instead of small school champs.
Are there exceptions? OF COURSE! Sometimes kids run a 9:0x 3200m to win the small division, but these are rare. If you are not top 20 across all divisions, then D1 is not probably not your calling.
My advice: Be honest with yourself. If you aren't on scholarship, seriously consider D2 and D3. Just because you could walk onto a D1 team for a year doesn't mean you should. You will have a much better college athletic experience at a D2 or D3 school were you matter and were you see success. Go to a school were you actually get to work with the main coach and aren't just an expendable guinea pig for the GA. Go to a school were you're racing kids who ran comparable times FTW instead of pulling up the rear against dudes that ran 8:50's as a HS junior.
Be proud of your accomplishment, but be humble. Don't let your title give you a big head. Choose a school that actually fits your ability.
