Many people believe what they are saying. I alienated a track mom who claims that her best guy friend ran sub 4 mile in HS and she witnessed it. The crowd was cheering for him to get under 4 and they went crazy when he did it. I looked him up and found State results at 4:20 so maybe it was the first time that he broke 4:30 when they were cheering but she still doesn’t believe me and won’t talk anymore.
Every one I've ever met knocks time off - they are not doing it by mistake
Worst recent example. A 40 year old PT who is actually not a bad runner 35xx 10km. Sent me a training session he did with a 31:xx 10km time trial! He's not even breaking 17 in parkruns
When he first met me he said his pb when younger was 16:02. Now its down to 15:20.
He also tried to impress me on first meeting with a list off the world records he'd saved on his phone. I interupted him and gave the list from memory. Why would someone lie if they know someone knows about running and can check times!
When I trained to coach one of the UKA coaches said he'd run 1:47 in his prime. I was doubtful as even older results are on PO 10 if you've gone that fast. Turned out later out a guy I know used to race against him - 1:55 at best. Again pretty obvious I'd check
