Excellent, love Mary Cain. So much talent. Her main problem getting back to form is weight (I don't think discipline and work ethic are at issue here). The body will iron itself out, and your talent doesn't leave you. You just can't eat as much as a teenager anymore. Discipline the body - a low-carb diet baby, and you'll be back in no time!
After taking a year off almost everyone needs a full season of getting back close to previous form. Then the following year the fitness is all the way back.
I tend to work on the off-distances when you know you won’t be at your best in your primary event. Meaning, more of the 800, 3000, 5000 and maybe even a low key 10000. It’s all about getting the form back and getting momentum. She can still break 4:00, just not this year.
She's done! Don't read positive things into what she said. She is happy with her non running life now.
I think MC is vague about her plans because she's unsure about her talent. I hope she runs enough in 2018 to answer the questions that she has about that. I think she's fortunate that she can say this is an "off year" (although there are certainly plenty of big US & European meets and Nationals), if that helps her manage her own expectations. I hope we'll be able to see her run competitively in 2019.

+1. Talent doesn't go away? Yes.....it does. DNA stays the same, but there's a whole lot more to the 'talent' recipe. In most cases, in fact, changing bod, shifting interests/priorities, wrong life situation. All these things and more decrease apparent talent. And then there's injuries....
Did either of them get the job?

yeah i would agree. don't know what her tone sounded like but the text reads pretty insecure. a stress fracture shouldn't wipe you out for nearly 3 years.. you pull an emily infeld, cross train your butt off, and get back into it
it seems like her 2 years of great success were kind of a lightning in the bottle phenomenon. she still had the young teenager waif like body (NOT saying you can't be successful in a women's body but it takes more biomechanical work), no expectations or pressure, and an enormous amount of raw talent
interesting that she took a gap year, i thought she transferred directly from portland to fordham. it sounds like she ran into burnout in a major way in portland due to academic and athletic pressure, which led to weight gain and injury.
they way she talks says it all. ..... getting back in there, learning how to race, having fun.... etc(not direct quote but paraphrasing)
she is not making it back. when they say talent doesn't leave they forget to say that motivation does. you dont learn how to race again. that's just nonsense, it means you never really knew how to race or wanted to, you just ran really fast for some very specific personal reason. that reason, whatever it was, is gone. it aint coming back.
Does Mary Cain like to run in the rain?
Does Katelyn Tuohy run with joy?
Will King Ches become an American?
Will Brenda Martinez ever run a 'thon?
How do you tell the difference between a North and South Korean?
Is it true that Marlon Brando turned down the lead role in the remake of The Incredible Mr. Limpit?
Is Giselle mad at Tom for losing again?
All good questions, but who has the nerve to ask?

How is Hasay pro? Her PRs suck.
I'm assuming she requested no mention or reference to Salazar. I find it curious he escapes mention when he was the center of her running universe. Salazar has been vilified on the site (and rightly so!), but silence in this piece. What gives?
You pervert.

yeah...if you aren't sure if you'll run 4:05 or 4:20, planning a season is difficult. She can't get into the diamond league, so she has to go find meets - when you don't know how fast you'll be that's hard.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
