Should we be teaching our athletes to run like Karissa now that she is the best ever? Her form is everything that we teach not to do but she continues to improve. She looked so much worse than the other women in the race on Saturday. Would she be better or worse if she modified her form? I read that her coach improved the claw thing she does with her wrist and that has been the main contributor to her improvement.

Take a look at Jim Furyk's golf swing. Looks terrible; gets the job done. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

She is fast now, but she will break down from hard training quickly and likely have an injury filled pro career unless she works with someone. Seen this too many times with fast collegiate women.

No, good form doesn't necessarily translate to good performances. She is good because of her talent and the training she is doing, not the form. Improving your form can help, but it wont always make a huge difference.
Take Priscah Jeptoo for example... her form is completely bonkers, but it works for her and she has run 2:20 in the marathon + 2 major wins. Just because she is good in the marathon doesn't mean marathoners should be trying to use her form as an example to improve.

The same can be said about Almaz Ayana's hunched shoulders, Asbel Kiprop's super long stride, Paula Radcliffe's head bob etc. Just because it works for them and they are good, doesn't mean it will apply the same to someone else. -
Agreed. Hopefully Al Sal will fix her in the future.

Interesting connection to Lisa Kohl. Almost identical stories of Iowa girls who were decent HS runners who went on to be at the top of the NCAA. I am still thinking that if somebody like Alberto works with Schweizer, she will continue to improve to run 14:40 and sub 4.

Tiffany Mcwilliams anyone? She was the next great miler. Horrible form and broke down after college from running too hard on that form. Talent can only take you so far with bad machanics. It is not just the racing, it limits hiw much work you can put in over time.

Her form was good, and her mechanics fine too.
The issue with her was a different coach, who changed her training and tactics. -
That caused her injuries? The coach?

Everyone panic! Lets take the fastest collegiate 3k runner of all time and immediately change everything she does mechanically because it doesn't look good enough to some people. Get her on the "Mary Cain - Form Modification Plan" ASAP!!!

Schweizer has had horrendous form for 8 years, though it has improved some. She won't go anywhere near Salazar. Parents are too knowledgable to put her down that path. She has had 1 injury in her 8 years (10th grade).
Wrong on Koll btw. Koll's form was good until she got injured and then she continued to run while injured - 2010 US Championships for example. The injuries kept coming because she never got healed. That was followed with lots of stress fractures. The SFX though not occurring in college are a result of the college years. There is quite the track record associated with the system she trained under and SFXs. -
Schweizer seems like the most humble girl ever. I hope she is the next great American. Heck, she is already one of the current great Americans. I hope she is one of the next greats in the world.

At least Ihmels solved that issue since going to BSU.
