Modern automatics with computer controlled shifting get better mileage over stick . Those old fools who think stick gets better mileage don't know what they are talking about.
The few manual transmission cars that are still out actually have smaller Overdrive gears (5th gear or 6th gear usually) than the automatic version of the same model. Gear ratios are published and the biggest gear in an MT Mazda 6 for example is shorter than it's AT counterpart.
http://forum.mazda6club.com/mazda6-atenza/349241-2015-16-mazda-6-gear-ratios-manual-versus-automatic.htmlIt used to be that MT cars did get better mpg, whether their owners were "old fools" or not. But this was due to them being geared HIGHER than those automatics and also due to the automatics never being able to be in Neutral, it is always pushing ahead.
This disadvantage still exists, but can be mitigated with the use of a DCG automatic
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-shift_gearboxSo, the manuals could still get better mileage than automatics if they were geared the same or higher than the ATs, and the gap would be almost nothing between an MT and a DCG, but the gearing has to be the same.
