Agreed. If your kid really likes dogs and wants to run with one, but you don't want everything that goes into owning one, check with your local shelter to see if he an volunteer. I know the Oregon Humane Society actually has volunteer positions to literally run with the dogs. Another option is to foster.
Please share your dog running expertise!

When I read that your HS kid wants a dog and you parents don't really want to play with it, I have to day please think about it again!
One likely scenario (in my eyes the most likely) is that your kid loses interest/ moves out/ whatever in 1-5 years and you have to watch after it, with all the obligations that come with owning a dog (walk it at least 3 times a day EVERYDAY, be limited with holidays etc., demand it mentally and physically). If you're not ok with that, don't geht one, because you can't expect from your kid to watch after a dog for the next 15 years in this phase if life.

All of these. Your post highlights exactly why you shouldn't get a dog. Have your son go to the shelter, as suggested, and grab a running buddy on the days it works for him.

Stop telling everyone how to live their lives, you damn leftist. -
My dog is quite old. However, he passed a lot of bad situations when getting older. I remember when he got a problem with mood because he didn't even want to climb stairs, walk, or even play. He got a little depressed, felt anxiety pretty often, and even yelp if touched. After that, I decided to talk with his vet about this problem but he said that he has some injuries and prescribed an analgesic drug. IT WAS A MISTAKE! It is not what should be prescribed since when I talked with my friend, dog lover, he said that my dog is getting older and instead of this, he recommended taking a ruff hero https://www.ruffhero.com/glucosamine-for-dogs that would give my dog a natural mobility supplement which would improve his state. Since then my dog is feeling better. We are playing btw!
