The W50 record is 5:00.59 by Gitte Karlshoj, but the W50 1500 record of 4:36.79 by Clare Elms is the strongest of the lot. 48 seconds off the open record compared to about 36 seconds for the M50 record.

Beat me to it. W53 Clare Elms ran 5:08 last year.

I should note: 4:38 = 5:00
Raced her several times in road races back in the mid- to late-90s in the Pittsburgh area. Never beat her. Haven't heard anything about her in probably 15 years. Great to see she us still racing and kicking @ss.
Sorry this is somewhat oblique to the topic, but 23 days after Bannister broke 4:00, Diane Leather (GBR), aged 21, ran 4:59.6 to become the first woman to break 5:00.

Doris Brown Heritage was the first in the world to do it indoors, at age 23 in Vancouver, B.C. on Feb. 19, 1966, and was the first American woman to go sub-five, indoors or out.
Sonja is still super fit and races a lot locally in South Florida. Wouldn't be surprised if she kept it up for several more years
Smoove runs many sub 5 miles every week.
But I'm not burdened by breasts or hips and I have a normal amount of testosterone for a skinny man who runs too much.

And she's a MILF too.

For the last 15 years she has been even more dominant than ever. Many world teams, age group record holder many times over. You must have dropped out of the running ‘scene’. Would love to hear of some of your PGH road race remineces. Great Race? I know the early 80s had Malcolm East ever present while Tammy Slusser was one of the more dominant female road racers.
Suzy Hamilton can break 5 this summer and she is almost 50.
Huh. My guess was gonna be 55.
4:25 is equivalent for a male ( I may be off by a little(
What is the oldest male to go under 4:25 ( or whatever time is equivalent to 5:00 )

I can believe it. I’m her age. I’m running faster, longer, and more technical ultras than I did 15 years ago, but my mile time has declined. As you get older, your mind gets tougher. Your body doesn’t.
I’m not surprised it’s that young. It seems to me that it’s mostly men who keep training “seriously” as masters runners. Women seem to be more likely to just move on with their lives.
How many masters women run mile track races? Surely they will be running the 1500m?
