So for the past two months of indoor track season my coaches have been giving us the usual sets of workouts (8x400, 12x200, 6x800, etc.), but at much faster paces than we’re used to doing. We struggle to hit the times a lot and usually end up dropping my a couple seconds.
Yesterday the workout was 8x400s at 64 seconds with three minute rest. The first three for me were in 63, 63, and 64. After that,we started dropping to 67s and coach ended up cutting the workout to only 6 reps instead of 8. Personally, I’ve ran a 2:47 1000m, 2:10 800m, and 4:50 1600m this indoor season and I don’t think some of these workouts are realistic for my skill level.
Other examples:
3x300s @ 41s, full recovery
6x800s @ 2:35-2:40
8x200s @ 29s
8x600s @ 1:50
My speed has definitely improved a lot from last year but I feel like we’re going to eventually burn out if we keep doing hard 90% workouts once or twice a week.
Is it safe to keep doing these workouts? I trust my coach but I want to avoid getting injured or burning out by the end of outdoor track.
