Male, late 30's, wife & kids, running about 45 miles each week. I love to get sleep but I have really started enjoying when it is time to get the day going. I am usually in the bedroom lying down 8 hrs and 15 minutes each night, but rarely sleep nearly that long, especially continuously. My sleep is almost always broken because of the need to take a leak.
99% of the time I wake up at least once to pee.
70% of the time I wake up at least twice to pee.
1% of the (like 3-5 days per year) I sleep through the night
Waking up twice usually means I go to bed at 10pm, wake up at 2:30am to pee, go back to sleep easily, then wake up again at 5am to do it again, then wrestle to go back to sleep, then get up for good at 6:15am.
Waking up once might sound better than waking twice, but often times it is worse because I get REM sleep longer, hence I am more rested when I wake to pee and it is harder to go back to sleep. In a similar example, this means I usually go to bed at 10pm, wake up at 4:30am to pee (one and only time), then really fight to go back to sleep at all, then get up for good at 6:15am.
I try to limit fluids at night, however, I run in the late afternoon/evenings (done by 6pm) and am often thirsty after the longer runs and workouts.
How much impact does this have on my running?
