Personally I agree with dropping the 10k on the track for a 10k XC race. The races are too similiar to have both in the Olympics, and of the two options I find XC racing (on a proper course with hills and diffcult terrain) to be much more exciting to watch than a track 10k.
As someone who also loves watching cycling, I like to compare a championship track 10k to a flat stage in the TDF. Rarely a breakaway can get away and the majority of the race is formulaic. It is very exciting in the last few moments but most of the race is controlled and predictable.
A XC race is more like a one-day classic or a TDF punchy hill stage, where a breakaway can go from a long way out. There are lots of surges and you have to watch the whole race closely because the decisive move could come at any moment. Much more exciting to watch and a better overall test of the athletes.
Also having an XC race would allow for a team element and a larger field. I would love to see how different countries approached team tactics. Obviously the East African countries would dominate but it would still be awesome to watch. I think most people would agree NCAA XC is way more fun to watch than the NCAA 10k on the track. For the Olympics pick the better race.
