Maybe should be in it's own thread but here is a great slideshow from a presentation with some actual science about females and how they develop and some stats.

Is Grace Ping Update?
Report Thread

The points for me are these:
1- the girls have done very well and are good. However it is absolutely foolish to talk about their “world record” youth accomplishments and predict anything similar down the road.
2- the vast majority of the women at usatf championships in 1500-10k, while very good in hs, were considerably further back than the pings in hs. Basically there are few phenoms in hs that are now top us runners and top 20 world class runners.
3- i believe there is a delicate balance of intensity that must be maintained in youth and up thru hs, college. Part of the intensity is physical training but it also includes emotional intensity. I just dont like how too much emotional intensity at young ages gets in the way of a kids running experience. -
I didnt see the report until after my post. It backs up my intuition. Thanks for posting it.

I dunno, but why should I care what a lawyer has to say about running?
(Pardon me, I have to go: my plumber, a chiropractor, is here to fix my sink.) -
Anyone else notice the "JD" after the report author's name? wrote:

Oh, sorry I didn't realize people could only specialize in one thing.
How about someone whose been a Coach and involved with the sport for a long time? -

Look at a young age runner who is better than the Pings: 9th grader Sydney Masciarelli FootLocker xc 2018, NBNationals Outdoor 2019 champ.
And gasp she plays BBall Hoops in the winter.
If there is an argument to be made for potential she eclipses the pings by a lot. And argument against over specialization. -

Yeah, @ Cotter (a small, private school) they've often run/trained with the boys---but @ Cotter the boys struggle to keep up with them.
It has been the case numerous times that at various meets (Same course, same day), the Pings end up running faster times than any of Cotter's boys.
So it can't hurt them to run with some boys who will really push them.
The crazy thing is that in 2017 Cotter’s top boy Garet Grant (class of 2018) barely broke 18 minutes in HS, but look at what he’s been doing in college! He got 12th at MIAC! And lead the Gusties to 4th place there! He did break 10 minutes in the 3200 his senior year though -

Why are all these posts prefixed with "Is"?
"Is [name] update? "and "[Name] goes home devastated" are classic letsrun.com subjects and have been for a long time. People do it on purpose because it's somewhat become a joke or a nuance of the site.
Horrible english. This is the same forum that will crucify you for having a typo even if they know exactly what you meant. -
In the video game world it's "all your bases are belong to us". In my college circle of friends it's the "sweet and sour dick" that was on the special list at the local chinese restaurant. Always worth a chuckle, whenever they come to mind. That's what update, devastated and discus? are, just good fun that becomes an ongoing joke on the site.

Kastor was a star from the start. Does she count?
-
No. She wasn't the 2nd best high school runner in 7th grade. She was good but developed on a nice even line.
-
Thats because you dont know what you're talking about. The success she has had at a young age unfortunately gives NO indication of her success in college and beyond. Its almost like a second puberty all young women have. She is not going to naturally stay the little stick figure she has been. How well her body transitions and is able to gain muscle is going to be a big factor. There is a reason there is a long history of young girls dominating certain sports at VERY young ages. XC, gymnastics, long distance swimming, Ice skating. There are always exceptions, but historically in certain sports, the peak ages for girls are 15-18 yrs old. I do agree it may be changing with the advancement of sports science, but historically the girls who dominate at a young age, are not the ones who succeed after HS age.

Grace Ping was nearly as tall as her short, petit mom a few years ago. Here are two pics. One more recent. One older. Her mom is tiny. Her mom has PRs of 15:58 for 5k, and 3:01 for the marathon. Her dad has run 16:01 for 5k.

Desert Vista Girl's Cross Country has a new coach.
"Phoenix Desert Vista has hired two new head coaches for girls sports teams, schools officials have confirmed.
Dave Williams has been hired as the Desert Vista girls basketball head coach and Megan Ping as the school's girls cross country head coach job."

So the girls (Grace and Lauren) now have their mom as their coach. That appears to work pretty well for Brooke Rauber and some others..... -
This is interesting. Ryan (dad) has always been their coach. Did the school want to make it look like a female is coaching a girls' program?
-
I suspect mother Ping will be in charge of administration, supervision, and emotional support while father Ping will be a volunteer coach in charge of writing the training plans in consultation with Tinman.
This seems to be the general setup of past years including their annual summer camp where Tinman coaches in person. This year it was held at NAU in July. -
I see Bill Meylan says this about the Ping sisters in his preseason team rankings:
"The combination of Lauren & Grace Ping is top returning "top two" of all teams …"
http://tullyrunners.com/XC2020/PreSeasonNatGirls2020.htm
He's right. When it comes to any team's top-two duo, I can't think of a better "1-2 punch" nationally. -
I have a bad feeling about this coaching situation. If she does not improve from last year, I will be very curious to see where that puts her for recruiting purposes.
