Background: I'm 20, healthy, single, in college, in Minnesota, I run road races but am not on a sports team. No income.
I missed the deadline to just "renew" my previous year of health insurance coverage. It was on Jan 14th and I'm an idiot so I checked 4 days too late. That health insurance was free because of my low income (college student). My university does not have its own health insurance policies.
I'm going to try to get a special enrollment period by arguing that I did "lose previous insurance", because last year's is ending. but I know that's something I basically voluntarily did through ignorance.
What I would like to know is 1.) do you have any advice? and 2.) Do you know of any non-predatory health insurance plans for college students? Google gives me basically (secretly)supplemental, red flag riddled companies like Everest and LifeShield plans that don't even meet Obamacare ACA mandates to avoid the Tax Penalty.
Important Info:
1.) I am willing to pay whatever I realistically have to for the next 12 months for Full (as in not supplemental), ACA Mandate-satisfying coverage. I just don't even know where to look for it.
2.) I am willing to get the shoddy insurance if I have to and pay the tax penalty in April, but I don't want to get bankrupted if I break a leg between now and July, when I will hopefully have a job.
I seriously am grateful for any advice. I'm sorry this is not running related at all, but I know there are intelligent people here who know things I don't and are more reasonable than a insurance salesman.
